[Marc Stein] Basically the CBA says if there is a firearm on team premises (or on a team plane), that’s an automatic 50-game suspension. That’s why the league is trying to ascertain where was the gun before the Instagram video

  1. Why is a Knicks fan posting this? We already know this.

Ja Morant has enough money to hire a good enough lawyer that this should be a non-issue. If it somehow does turn into a 50 game suspension then that means it is a much larger team problem.

The CBA doesn’t actually say that. 50 days is the precedent that was set by the Arenas/Crittenton case because there was 50 games left in the season, but nowhere in the language of the CBA does it say ‘50 games’. Someone on r/nba pulled up the actual text.

Stein is such a goof. He’s now setting a public expectation which puts unneeded additional pressure on the league office.

Gotta have that “friend” fall on the sword if this is true. No other option really.

Honest to god, it might be in the Grizz best interest if he gets the 50.

Not on some “We’re better without Ja.” Just, it seems like it could be enough to actually get through to him, and it seems like our team culture will be stronger if we build it up more without Ja, then reintroduce him to the team.

Someone will take the fall for Ja. Nothing’s going to happen.

Are we really supposed to believe the NBA has been allowing its players and staff to bring guns and bombs on its chartered flights with absolutely zero bag checks/metal detection? Even for a superstar it seems a stretch that the most basic and essential TSA standards aren’t adhered to avoid a catastrophic accident

Remember when everyone believed for half a day that the NBA allows a singular scorekeeper to have sole control over the stats of 41 games with absolutely zero checks and balances? Maybe we should assume the NBA doesn’t just let dudes bring guns on planes with zero security checks

I doubt this ends up being proven. Ja is an absolutely top A list guy in any city/club he goes to at this point. He asks for a piece, he’s getting a piece.

Doesn’t really change anything as far as perception or guilt is concerned but from this very specific angle, yes it does.

Adam silver is weird if he lets this happen 50 games is insane

Not a Grizz fan, but interested in CBA stuff. Ja seemingly violated Section 9c of Article VI, which prohibits players from carrying firearms “whenever a player is traveling on any NBA-related business.” This isn’t limited to just the time physically traveling in the air, it seems to be at any point during a team road trip. The 50 games thing is completely made up.

The Commissioner has discretion under Article 35 of the league constitution to determine the suspension. The most applicable precedent would be Arenas/Crittendon who received 38 games, but the context was completely different: they had the guns in the locker room and brandished them in a threatening manner. The fact that Ja had it at a club while on a business trip is totally different. The social media factor cuts against him, but the ultimate suspension will probably come down to whether the gun is registered to him, whether he had the gun on any team property, and if there are any legal charges brought against him. Without that information, it’s hard to guess, but I’d be shocked if he’s back any earlier than 10 games from now.

    Unpopular Opinion:

Ja Morant should not play another game until April. David Stern would’ve solved this in 2 days time, meanwhile Adam Silver is letting this get worse for the Memphis Grizzlies image.

He definitely needs more than 2 games, or what stops upcoming 19 year old rookies to not be scared of getting caught with a gun? 2 games is not even a slap on the wrist for the potential negative outcome that Ja threatened.
