The OKC Thunder Are The Next NBA Dynasty

Despite losing Chet Holmgren for the season, the OKC Thunder were still one of the more interesting teams. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has had a career year and has solidified himself as a top 15 player in the league, Josh Giddey is far outperforming his projections as a player, and even Jalen Williams is looking like a hidden star that everyone needs to talk about.

The Thunder are overall the youngest team in the league at just 23 years of age, they’ve far exceeded expectations as they’re still in the playoff hunt, Chet Holmgren is set to come back next season, and they still have a ton of draft capital to further build their team. Here’s why I’m impressed by the OKC Thunder’s present and future, and I strongly believe they could be a future NBA dynasty.

  1. As a Thunder fan I agree with everything you said here. In some ways it may be a blessing in disguise that Chet, our #2 pick was ruled out for the year. This allowed for JDub to get inserted into the regular starting lineup, and he's not leaving the starting group any time soon because of it. He's beginning to show more of what we saw flashes of in the earlier season. A star player that is. In my opinion, he's the rookie of the year right now because he was a late lottery pick compared to Banchero, and his averages for the season are almost as impressive. But, the flashy stat lines don't show this right now. People don't ever include defense into the equation, and JDub is already becoming a defender that is almost on par with our best, Lu Dort. It is possible if JDub keeps his play up for the rest of the season it will become more obvious that he should be ROTY. I am extremely curious to see what happens this off-season with the Thunder. We have all of the pieces right now, but it has to start coming together next season. If it does, the Thunder will more than likely be a top 4 seed next year, and the year after that will they will be favorites for a championship run.

  2. Great GM in Presti, excellent coach in Daignault. He has them playing with fantastic ball movement and cuts — similar to the best of the Warriors offense. They are a fun team to watch.
SGA emerging as one of the best players in the league. Giddey is a good complementary piece as a 'Magic Johnson' style point guard and Williams looking like a steal in the draft.
"Dynasty" is a little overhyped as they haven't even made it to the playoffs. Things can go wrong really fast with emerging "DYNASTIES" — just look at the Nets and now the Grizz; best not to overhype a team.
They need a healthy Holmgren and maybe one more really, really good big man in the draft. Certainly should be going to the playoffs every year in the near future. Can they compete for a title in the next few years? 🤔
Good to see small market teams like OKC succeed so hope they do.

  3. Got my magic and pistons before okc but they definitely have a bright future for sure

  4. As a mavs fan I feel like Luka will get traded to the thunder at some point in the next few years, especially if kyrie leaves.

  5. I miss the 80s and 90s, when guys stayed on a team. It was just such a different experience loving the same group of guys for years.

Rivalries were also WAY more interesting and intense, because they traveled through shared careers and legacies together. Young Jordan playing Kareem, and then old Jordan playing Kobe – one of the last legacy players.

I miss that connection to a city and team. Now you like teams, but love players. It's hard to get committed to a team when you know it's so temporary.
