After Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, can the Brooklyn Nets attract superstars?

The superstar era in Brooklyn ended when Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving both asked for trades at the deadline this season. But what does that mean for the Nets going forward and do recent comments about the Nets by both players mean anything for the team’s future prospects?

The Locked on Nets guys take a look at the situation, examine what both Durant and Irving had to say about their respective times in Brooklyn, and see what the landscape is for the team now. They discuss Mikal Bridges and Nic Claxton as centerpieces for the team, what free agency in the coming years could mean for the Nets and how they are positioned as a team.

  1. Instead of Houston, Harden, come back to Brooklyn. Sign for one year if you like. We promise you that Kyrie is not coming back.

  2. They need to get a up and coming PG. Someone that has potential and may develop into a high level player.

  3. Great talking point guys! It’s fun to watch this team now but the reality is aside from Iggy the last 10 Finals MVPs have been Lebron, Kawhi, KD, Giannis & Steph. If Nets want to win a title they’re gonna have to land on a superstar either from the draft or FA/trade

  4. NBA basketball is a multibillion dollar business. New York City is one of the biggest media markets in the world. It would be ludicrous for anyone to think that very good players wouldn't want to come here. It's no longer a question of whether they would want to come to Brooklyn but more on who's worthy, of them, should be allowed to come here. After the KD/Kyrie/Harden/Simmons fiasco, we should be "very" picky.

  5. The Nets should steer clear of any players that want to come to the Nets because they want to play with "one" particular player, even if it's for a star. It remind you of when KD came here because he just wanted to play with Kyrie. And, obviously, it panned out to no Kyrie, no KD. The criteria for any player coming to the Nets should be, among other things, their faith in the organization, their fondness for the head coach, respect for the players, etc, etc.

  6. We have an experienced head coach and an experienced starting five that'll improve if they stayed together. Lets not throw away, what we've built, up to this point, by getting too far ahead of ourselves concerning trades, over the summer. We should keep continuity in mind. Continuity bring stability and a stable organization is the destination of every player or coach.

  7. Don’t get me wrong… this is my favorite Nets media but this episode… fellas… let it go.

  8. There is no question in my mind that a the Nets are a desirable destination because a) it’s New York City, b) the current roster is attractive, and c) they will make the money available if they find someone they want. The Nets should be very “picky” (as Claude said) about who they target. That player must fit in with the culture and style of play they are trying to cultivate.

  9. I hope the Nets don’t go intentionally star searching or try to recreate another super team. If you look around it has rarely worked. What you need is build around a home grown star through the draft and when you have your star they react more stars. Bridges is wonderful BUT he is 26 years old late bloomer. Now if a potential opportunity presents itself you look but Buyer beware. The types i stars that want to bolt their teams are potentially culture killers. Like the new hot guys are like Trae Young and Luka buyer beware folks. These are two very coddled superstars who already shown that their leadership abilities have much to be desired. We don’t need that all over again regardless of how talented they are because when things get hard just KD they will bolt. When you trade for a superstar they have zero loyalty to your franchise. You didn’t draft them or develop them. They are hired gun. They have no particular affection for the Nets it’s a business decision.

Now I’m sure Joe will want a quick rebound and I get it but the Nets have to stop trying to be the knicks and follow the Golden State Model. Draft you own stars, develop them and then that super star who wants to ring chase like KD who want to jump on the bandwagon you go get him in free agency.

  10. I’d sell off pretty much everything this off season and dump salary as much as I can. Rebuild. Claxton, Bridges, and Dinwiddie stay the rest go as I build through the draft. Probably keep Joe Harris and let his deal expire. If I can’t get Ben Simmons to medically retire I tell him to go home and we move on and eat the money. Rebuild will take longer than his remaining two years anyway it’s a sunk cost on bad trade by Marks.

They probably won’t do this. They will try rehab Ben to save face and sign Cam Johnson to a massive deal to save face. Etc same old same old solidifying our way to mediocrity.

  11. Doug- Jaylen Brown is not a fan of the Nets and especially not Joe S. did you see what Brown said recently? Not happening man and he is a young player who is a VP of the Union. So he has a lot of clout. So his opinion of the nets holds a lot weight more than an older head like KD.

  12. Porzingus as a second level stretch big is an interesting player who I think could play next to Claxton. I still want a full rebuild but I think a Claxton, Dinwiddie, Bridges, and Porzingus lineup would be interesting.

  13. Let’s talk draft. Two players that intrigue that are young freshmen coming into the draft with a lot of stretch big potential is and will fall around the Nets picks or reachable in a trade are:

    GG Jackson and mouhamed gueye

  14. Always great stuff from you guys Doug and Adam 👏 ive always stuck to the belief Marks did the right thing since day 1 after the trade and all the naysayers finally are on board now that bridges is a star and we got a pile of picks for a 35 year old player made of glass who speaks glowingly of Durant and the Nets. #netsworld
