Will Luka Doncic demand a trade? Why the Mavericks are in trouble | 3 Points with Chris Mannix

Chris Mannix is joined by Howard Beck to break down the issues with the Dallas Mavericks and their losing record since trading for Kyrie Irving. They discuss the ramifications of the Mavericks missing the playoffs this year, why Kevin Durant’s trade request with four years left on his contract could entice Luka Doncic to ask out of Dallas, and why the Mavericks may have no choice but to re-sign Kyrie Irving.

  1. He played good defense against the philly. Most of the time. JVG told you multiple times during the game about it. Experts aint watching games.

  2. The worst thing that can happen is if they miss the playoffs without Luka on the roster. We are half way there anyway.

  3. It may be Luca he may be the problem. He did not gel good with Porzingas he to ball dominate. They should have kept the team they had before the trade and kept the point guard that went to the Knicks.

  4. Luka Basketball isn't a sustainable playstyle. But it has benefited Luka tremendously.

  5. Man, you guys are between a rock and a hard place. Irving is poison. Too mercurial to be relied upon. The other problem is Cuban. He’s TOO hands on. Well meaning and willing to throw money around to fix things, but in the end, good money after bad is a terrible place to be. You’re where the Knicks were in the post Ewing era. Trying to hold onto past glory but no real plan because it’s revenue that makes your team, and quick money to maintain the revenue. Bad decisions are short sighted ones.

  6. Oh no the host fell for the national media talking points 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️

  7. I think Howard is right, that the Mavs should be nervous right now. I don't quite get, after all the evidence they discuss that supports that conclusion, how Chris's final take is that he thinks they have not just this offseason but also next season and the 2024 offseason to address the roster issues. Of course he didn't define what in his mind that would look like..if he meant "get them back to a solid roster capable of being dangerous in the playoffs" during this offseason, and upgrading from there to "real championship contender" the following season & offseason, yeah, I'd buy that. But if they don't make serious headway this offseason, they're in deep trouble. Luka already looks halfway checked-out…they realistically look to me like then next season's trade deadline would be make or break, if they even make it that far before Luka says get me outta here.

  8. It comes down to Kidd benching Luka for most of the 4th every game and giving kyrie the closing keys. They are burning the bridge with Luka

  9. For Luka to win a ring, most of his teammates need to be quality 2 way players and his co star needs to be a defensive big who can score as well (for example Giannis). He also needs someone to run the offense when he is resting at the bench.

  10. This was one of the worst trade Mavs ever did. Kyrie is great… but to get him… they pretty much gave away defense and made them worse. They were better off with DFS and Dinwiddie as the backup ball handler. Mavs don't need Kyrie… they already have Luka who is better than Kyrie. They need solid role players to surround Luka, perhaps a solid backup PG like Brunson, a solid big, and 3&D guys.

  11. If I’m the mavericks I’m doing everything to try to keep Luka to stay

  12. Luka Doncic is The New James Harden when he was in Houston, a lot of dribbling, step back 3, step back 3, NO DEFENSE, not in peak conditioning and Luka whines THE WHOLE GAME, HE'S GOTTA BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR HIS FAULTS AND SHORTCOMINGS!

  13. Give Luka a good roster that’s all last time we had a semi good team we went to the conference final

  14. Luka will demand 2 packs of Newports per game. They should tank and swing for the fences in the draft. Luka is a whiner and a crybaby. He's overweight and is not taking responsibility for his part in the demise. There is no excuse for being tubby during the season. They let Jaylen Brunson go for nothing. That's crazy. Bruson was better for the Mavs than Kyrie. They just needed one more piece. They were so close last year. So management and ownership is the problem. Bad decisions.

  15. This is not a Kyrie issue this is a Luca issue. He is physically unfit and he mentally not wanting to get fit. He wants people to just throw him in the ball and let him shoot. But they need more than just shooting. He needs to be able to get the ball run it down and come back and then shoot. This is a luka issue mentally and physically.

  16. Why are we letting Luca off the hook? He needs the hustle he needs to get in shape and he needs to get the ball. Yeah he shoots cause somebody gives him. The ball you don't go get the ball.

  17. Good that the Mavs are on the clock with Luka. The only reason they are relevant is because of Luka.

  18. This could be a blessing in disguise for the mavs if they can get a lottery pick and find a future #2. Especially if it ends up being a top 5 pick

  19. If there hadnt been the German Legend Dirk, with an absoultely incredible Work Ethic and Drive, Mark Cuban would be maybe considered as the worst owner in Basketball😮

  20. I think its unfair to say he sabotaged the celtics. They had to many guys that needed the ball in their hands and kyrie got knee surgery the first year he was there.

  21. It feels like the coach does horrible choices and just doesn't have it. You can see the confusion of the players even after wins. Where they understand that the plays didn't cut and/or they can't rely on a common sense reaction to the flow of the game from their stuff.

  22. Kyrie is a good player but his style of game can not fit most of the teams. He hold the ball to score, it's stagnant style, and LUKA play slow.. Slow+ stagnant = lost.

  23. people keep saying dorian finney smith is a good defender, but don’t want to see the mavs were among the worst defensive teams even before the trade. it’s not luka. he’s not good, but he wasn’t good last season either and they ranked 9th in defense then.

  24. Start playing your rim protecting center in Javale McGee!!! Defense is bad, rebounding is historically bad. That’s what you get when you play Dwight and Maxi at the center position!!!
Play Javale at center and play wood at power forward. Jason Kidd’s rotation is horrendous!!!
Speaking of Jason Kidd, the Mavs got crucified for trading for Jason Kidd in 2008 and it got worse when Devin Harris was an all star in 2009 (similar to Jalen Brunson now). In hindsight the Kidd trade went well when Dallas won it all in 2011.
Right now the Kyrie trade looks bad. It could great in a few months!!!

  25. The rest of the west is the same….if he demands a trade he will get traded to a bad team….assets are with bad teams and the other team will have too deal with his defense and tech

  26. kyrie since joining dallas : – 1st in steals ; 2nd in blocks ; 2nd in plus/minus , 4th in rebounds. averaging 27/6/6 on 50/39/94 .. and mavs have been better with just kyrie and when luka sitting and have a .800 winning percentage with just kyrie. quit the bs. the mavs were trassh BEFORE the trade. you dont become 1st and 2nd in steals and blockks IF YOU NOT PLAYING DEFENSE… also kyrie is the only one who has stats and history playing off the ball, so stop trying to callhim ball dominant. such bad journalism and takes.

instead of these weird kyrie bashers people should follow facts.. instead of hyping a 46/33.8/73.5 4TO averages on a heavy ball dominant iso player who is also top in techs and no defense who brings 42-43 regardless of whos on court… maybe they should expect luka to learn how to play off the ball like the NON point guard that he is. yall praise this ball hogging iso player when his number DONT relate to winning. it relates to INDIVIDUAL amazing stats. but blame irving and say his numbers are just flashy and doesnt reflect winning lmao. luka is 5 years in and hasnt changed his game one bit. his pt shooting his 3pt his free throws his turnovers all the same. quit the crap.

mavs didnt go anywhere til luka got injured for almost 20 games and THEN brunson showed what ball movement and team offense was about and dinwiidde went super saiyan too. now luka back and its slow pace and more iso and back to the same results. losers wanna hate on the only player balling out for that team where luka isnt " having fun" if he isnt shooting bad 3pt step backs at 33.8% percentage. this people are bad journalists.. but this is to be expected nowadays.

  27. Man check this out: He don’t play no defense, he’s big and tall, and won’t sit down in his stance and take on the challenge on that end of the floor. He comes off as soft (not due to being a European player but rather from being cuddled and anointed too early) and entitled, and just doesn’t endear himself to you as a basketball player. It’s an unproven style. It’s never worked, ever. He’s not a winning player, he’s the antithesis of Austin Reves. Luka Doncic lacks grit and metal. That’s what’s holding the mavs back, they have the personality of there best player, whining and pouting and sulking over a missed call, not crossing the free throw line to get back on D. He’s still not learned the complain and sprint back combo yet and he may never, he may never.

  28. The Mavs are bad defensively — 31st in rebounding, giving up 54 percent in field goal attempts by opponents — they needed a rebounder, rim protector — and how did they solve the problem? — by gutting the team to get kyrie irving — for that alone the GM should be fired — last night Jalen Brunson scored 48 points and led the Knicks to defeat the Cavaliers in Cleveland — the same Brunson that the Dallas GM allowed to walk away — The Mavs are going nowhere for this season and next — Luka should bail, demand to be traded.

  29. Cuban thinks he understands basketball… likes shiny objects… doesn't get what matters… and now he owns the league's worst headache. Meanwhile his second star plays for the Knicks. 😂😂😂

  30. Problem with the Kyrie trade is he provides what mavs already had — Christian wood was already providing efficient scoring punch for the mavs with 0 defense and Kyrie is just another guy lijke that. Post trade they just gave huge portion of Wood's minutes to Kyrie. Of course Kyrie can also handle the ball but they already have Luka. They basically gave up much needed defensive wings and role players for redundancy.
