– The Mavericks sit one game back of the NBA play-in tournament, and NBA insider Shams Charania of The Athletic is saying the Mavericks are considering shutting down Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving for the remainder of the season to preserve a top-10 pick.
– The Mavericks currently sit 10th in the tankathon standings. If they finish 11th or worse in the 2023 NBA lottery, the pick conveys to the New York Knicks as part of the Kristaps Porzingis trade.
– Dirk Nowitzki was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame this weekend, alongside Dwyane Wade, Tony Parker and Gregg Popovich. Shoutout to the goat!

Being out of the play-in race, it behooves them not to try to keep their pick and at that point you have the flexibility of potentially having that top-10 pick, you have three first round picks you can trade this offseason to go get a star and potentially more players on the marketplace.”

Mavs won one extra game in the Luka Lottery year, forcing them to trade up. This year, they shut it down, get to 9th and keep the pick, completing the redemption arc. They also re-sign Kyrie to finally get their first official big fish!
Jason Kidd not changing the lineups or adjusting when the team is free falling is the reason why the mavs are where they are front office made zero moves and Luka has to get in shape

If media knew the Mavericks were tanking to get their top 10 protected draft pick, why has everyone spent the last month annihilating Luka and Kyrie who have nothing to do with that questionable management decision?
When you put those stats up there for draft picks make sure you make it clear those are top 10 lottery draft picks and not Western conference seedlings. It’s gets confusing if that’s not clear.

tank is better than trying to get a play in hope
Mark Cuban is the single biggest reason for the failure of the team this season. Say what you want about Harrison, but he can only do what Mark allows. Cuban has perpetual "Big Fish Syndrome," where he refuses to lock in the talent he has because he believes he'll be able to sign the Big Fish next off season, and it NEVER works. Mavs let good talent walk so they can "keep their powder dry." For what? Nothing. Maybe Harrison is right there with Cuban on that island, but we don't know. As for Kidd, he has either given up on coaching this group, or can't coach anyway. Either way, Mavs need a new coach with a sterner countenance to impose some discipline. Discipline is exactly what Luka and some other folks on the team need. Or maybe the better word is accountability. You can't cut people these days, but you can bench them and talk about the lack of effort, the immaturity, the unwillingness to participate in the defensive game, the crybaby complaining. Embarrassment and encouragement are two sides of the same coin.

I have liked the moves that Nico has made – I don't blame him for Brunson as much as others since he inherited that mistake contract that allowed him to be an UFA instead of RFA. They should have signed him at any price, and they didn't. That is an organizational, multi-year, fail. Other than that, Nico has done more than I could have imagined as Mavs GM. When he realized the team wasn't good enough and needed to add a top tier talent, they got it done at a good price that still allowed flexibility for more. And that is key – that trade wasn't the end, but the beginning. They absolutely need the offseason to restructure this team. I think McGee should have been playing all year – in the 20min/game role he was signed to fill. I think Wood is a PF for almost all purposes and needs to play next to an anchor. He has been miscast by JKidd, who is front and center as the problem for the Mavs this season. He acts like a one-trick pony that pouts if he can't get players that play exactly the way that he wants them to, rather than adjusting schemes to match his players' skillsets. Just terrible and makes me even wish Rick was here so that he could scheme it better! Don Nelson with this team would have been amazingly entertaining! haha. So yeah, they need to tank, keep the pick, and restructure this team for next season built around the amazing G/Wing lineup that they have built. They just need to either play their Frontcourt players, or get a new set that they will play. This crap of running out 4 guards and a defenseless C is such a beating. Make the adjustments, JKidd!!!
