The OKC Thunder have surprised the NBA this season with their seemingly realistic return to the playoffs. After Shai Gilgeous-Alexander became an All-Star and after a sophomore season jump by Josh Giddey, the Thunder’s rebuild looks just a few pieces away from being complete. After OKC Thunder rookie Chet Holmgren was ruled out for the season, not a lot of NBA circuits predicted OKC to have a rookie of the year candidate. But so far, Thunder rookie Jalen Williams looks primed to be a dark horse contender for the award. Jalen Williams or Jdub is OKC’s 12th overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft. He’s been playing lights out as a rising star alongside the Thunder’s young core which features Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Josh Giddey, Lu Dort, Aleksej Pokusevski, and Isaiah Joe.

OKC have also gotten significant contributions from their other rookies such as Ousmane Dieng and Jaylin Williams. But so far, it has been Jdub who’s been looking like a future star for the OKC Thunder. Recently, Jdub made his first game-winning shot against the Detroit Pistons via a putback off a Josh Giddey miss. It’s been Jalen Williams’ efficiency that’s been standing out for OKC this season, as he joins Shaquille O’Neal as the only rookies in NBA history to record a 66 percent true shooting mark over a 14-game span as first year players. But will OKC make the playoffs or even the play-in tournament? Whatever happens, Sam Presti has definitely built a steady young core with his stockpile of draft assets and even if OKC don’t get to land Victor Wembanyama, they have Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, SGA, Josh Giddey and the rest of OKC’s young core.
