The Mavericks 2023 NBA playoff hopes hang in the balance as Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving prepare to suit up for Mavericks vs. Kings. Jason Kidd’s Mavs will have to win their three remaining games of the 202-23 NBA season and have the Oklahoma City Thunder lose one more game in order to make the NBA play-in. Despite the Mavericks’ disappointing season, Kyrie Irving is expected to re-sign with the Mavericks in 2023 NBA Free Agency according to Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report. The Mavericks are also on the brink of keeping their pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, and The Ringer’s most recent NBA Mock Draft has the Mavs selecting Taylor Hendricks out of UCF. “The Mavericks are by far the NBA’s biggest disappointment, especially just one year removed from making the Western Conference finals. After losing Jalen Brunson for nothing, then trading core pieces from last year’s playoff squad for Kyrie Irving, this team is in a far worse place now, with a terrible defense and an unimaginative offense. Moving up in the lottery could be the key to bolstering the roster, but if they stay put and keep this pick, then drafting someone who can help aid their defense is the priority. Hendricks could come in right away and provide a versatility that no one else on the roster does.”

“Despite the Dallas Mavericks’ struggles since acquiring Kyrie Irving, the plan is still to re-sign the star guard, league sources told Bleacher Report. Irving is eligible for an extension, but he will instead allow his future to be decided in free agency this summer, sources said. Dallas is 9-16 since making the blockbuster trade, but the shortcomings do not fall on Irving’s shoulders. Going into the offseason, the Mavericks intend to surround Luka Dončić and—optimistically—Irving with versatile wing defenders and rim protectors to improve a defense that has been subpar. The team has fallen out of the play-in field and has very little chance to climb back in with three games remaining on its schedule.”

Don’t let Kyrie be “Brunson: the Sequel”
Everyone talks about Jalen Brunson. He was a good player, but Dallas was NEVER going to win a championship with Brunson. Kyrie with Mavs is way better.
Every true center and big 4 (6’10+) gets their double double in pts and rebounds against the Mavs. Tired of hearing wings and guards are going to help. They need consistent, athletic, rebounding center. Let Maxi and Wood play the 4 (natural position for both), and actually play a center to keep other team from driving right down the paint/off the offensive boards.

As a Mavs fan since about 1993… I cannot support not trying to keep the 10th pick. I wish the Mavs would just do more of what shrewd GM's do — maximize their assets. Going for the play-in won't do that. But, what I can see happening, is the Mavs sneaking in and Cuban saying around May, "everybody wanted us to tank those last 5 games, but we knew we would have a better chance in free agency if we tried to win…" Come July 28th… and the Mavs biggest summer move is trading for Dorian back to the team + signing like Eric Gordan to the MLE. I've seen it at least 6-7 times play out like that. And, 2 yrs later, OKC is having beat down parties at our expense come those mid-Feb games. Why – because they maximize the draft. But, we have Dirk… err, I mean, Luka! Go for the pick this year – please, Mark.
