The ‘Perfect’ Solution to End Tanking in the NBA w/ Keith Parish

The Portland Trail Blazers are pushing the boundaries of what intentional losing can look like.

So let’s update the standings on their race for the 5th best lottery odds.

Then Keith Parish (Fastbreak Breakfast, Grits and Grinds) joins the show. We get into the rational yet unfortunate world of intentional losses.

Keith pitches a radical anti-tanking solution. A system that rewards bad teams for winning and removes the incentives for chasing losses like benching Shaedon Sharpe for the final eight minutes of a tie game.

  1. The best solution to tanking when it comes to trading away all of your talent for trash as it were is to have a seperate playoff type thing for the teams that don't make the actual playoffs where the "champions" get the first overall pick. This would make it so while such tanking would guarantee going to the draft playoffs, if your team isn't good enough, they won't go far enough to win the #1 pick, meaning that if tanking doesn't go away, GM's who wish to tank have to be strategic about it rather than just burning down the old core and laughing while they watch it happen. The only issue i could see is if players know their playing for that first overall pick, they may not play as hard so the team staff don't get as good of a player to possibly replace them.

  2. My idea to end tanking is to go back to the unweighted lotto, giving all 14 lotto teams equal odds at every pick. In this years case, OKC would have the same chance for Wemby as Portland or Detroit.

  3. Or just flatten out the odds even more. Top 3 teams still get highest odds like 10% but the difference between them and the next odds is smaller.

  4. Spurs are already a top 3 odds. Even if they win out they still won't lose their positioning. They have no more incentive to lose. Hopefully they will really try and win the game against the Blazers.

  5. Per Chat GPT
One way to discourage tanking in the NBA while keeping things fair is by implementing a system that rewards teams for sustained success, rather than just the worst records.

For example, the NBA could create a new draft lottery system that gives teams a better chance of securing a top pick based on their overall performance over the past several seasons. This would be calculated by using a weighted average of the team's win-loss record over the past three to five years, rather than just their record in the current season.

By rewarding teams for sustained success, rather than just temporary failure, the NBA could create a more level playing field that discourages tanking while still ensuring that weaker teams have an opportunity to improve through the draft.

Another way to discourage tanking would be to increase the penalties for teams and individuals associated with tanking. This could include harsher fines, suspensions, loss of draft picks, or even expulsion from the league in extreme cases.

Ultimately, any solution to discourage tanking in the NBA must maintain a balance between competitiveness and fairness. The league should strive to create a system that promotes healthy competition while preventing teams from manipulating the system in their favor.

  6. Hey Mike, Question, Don't the bottom 3 teams all have the same odds for the top 4, (52.1%) and the #1 pick, (14.0%)? If so, it would not matter to the Spurs chances if they won all the rest of their games or lost them. Seeing as they are 5 games clear of the Hornets in 4th place. What am I missing?

  7. Great idea from Parish. It avoids giving the best teams the top picks, and makes post all-star break competitive.

  8. Bad teams should be able to offer more money to free agents instead of getting better draft odds. That would accelerate rebuilds

  9. Take your wins for the last 5 years add them up and Davide by 5 and the one with the fewest wins get #1 and so on. No lottery needed

  10. Let’s make it simpler. How about March 15 the 12 losing teams after that they get two points for winning and for every loss they get one point going towards the worst record in the draft.

  11. You know, this isn't a novel idea really, but I think it might be simpler than Keith's suggestion – but with a similar idea to incentivize winning all year. What if the outcome of every game resulted in "Points", if you beat a team you are supposed to beat, neither team gets any points or loses any points. If you beat a team equal to you, it gets you a point and costs the other team a point. If you beat a team that is better than you, it gets you 2 points (or more) and costs the other team 2 points (or more).

At the end of the season, the teams that miss the playoffs get odds from most points to least – for the teams that make the playoffs, the points don't really make any difference, but they could be used as better tiebreakers than things like "division record", etc.

  12. I wish he would have crunched the numbers and see what the lottery order would be with his scenario this season.

  13. I’ve been out of the loop and this is off topic but I was wondering if a sign and trade with Grant is possible? I’m ready for a rebuild.

  14. I like it. Make it the "win count" start with ~30 games left in the season. Correlate the actual number of games with the point in the season where the bottom 8 of the league don't change much.
