Di…Did Colin Cowherd just have a good take on the Trae Young rumors?

Sidenote, hearing these national Talking Heads discuss the Hawks is brutal. Not only Colin, all of them. It’s very clear these guys didn’t want to lick of Hawks basketball until last night lol

I object to 24 year olds being called “kids.” That’s my only thought.

“i’ve heard it enough that it has to be true”

People really think we’re gonna get rid of Trae just because he isn’t a leader lol, let me know when top tier NBA players need to be a leader to win a ring

He’s not wrong, Trae has been treated with kid gloves since he left high school (probably was before that too).

where is this locker room cancer BS coming from? just cuz trae didnt want to go to shoot around cuz he wanted to get treatment on his shoulder makes him a cancer to the locker room? give me a break

I dunno, some guys are just born leaders. You see it all the time in college football guys, especially QBs, going to the NFL.

Trae seems like an introvert that plays at being extroverted. I agree with Colin that we need to sign a leader. Give me someone like Draymond, Jimmy Butler, etc.

The main thing we’re really overlooking though isn’t lack of leadership, but that we probably need a top five player to win a title. Trae should be someone’s Pippin to their MJ. It’s so hard to win a title without a guy that’s a shoe-in hall of famer.

  7. Bucher seemed annoyed in the face when Colin mentioned Trae staying in ATL and for us to sign leaders

This might be kind of a spicy take on my part, but I’ve always thought the constant emphasis certain commentators put on players having to be “leaders” is a little weird. I mean, every team already has designated guys who are supposed to be the leaders — they’re called coaches. Saying that players themselves also have to be the “leaders” of other players, and that there ought to be this kind of hierarchy, just seems like a recipe for creating locker-room tensions about who’s the alpha dog and what the pecking order is and so on. I’d personally rather have all my players think of themselves as equals and act accordingly.

Of course, that being said, there’s also another kind of leadership, which is leading *by example*, and that’s the kind of leadership I’m 100% for, because it’s something *every* player can do in their own way. And if a guy is leading by example by hustling on defense and playing unselfishly and so on, it doesn’t matter if he’s giving a bunch of rousing locker room speeches or whatever — he can be as introverted as he wants, and his teammates will still want to play hard when they’re on the floor with him, simply because he’s a good teammate, and *that’s* ultimately what matters.

  9. Why does he sit so much higher than his guests?

Never heard a single actual Hawks team source, former or current, actually say Trae Young was a bad teammate. It’s his 5th year, bunch of dudes have played with Trae that haven’t said a negative thing about him.

There’s ONE dude in the media, that if/when he reports anything negative about Trae, I’ll believe him, and that’s Shaq.

Luka is also 24 years old and not a leader. Shai isn’t a leader. It’s rare that your superstar is truly the “rah rah” unifying leader, even Jordan pissed off his teammates and “lead by example.” How many superstars are actually these centralizing leaders people expect them to be? LeBron, and maybe Giannis? Embiid has fought with teammates, failed to lead, and gotten into drama but he’s still the cultural center of that team. Tatum has gotten into it with Jaylen Brown and hasn’t been a leader, but he’s still a superstar on a contending team. Draymond has been the leader of the Warriors for a long time, Steph is another “by example” kinda player. It’s rare you have someone like LeBron who’s a vocal leader and the star he is, and even then he wasn’t always like that.

  12. It’s all a play to get Trae out of Atlanta and into a big market like New York. The media hates Atlanta lol

    Yes.

But, the Hawks bigger issue is just that Young isn’t a franchise player. Depending on his teammates, he can be a good #2 or a fantastic #3. He’s just not good enough to carry a franchise that has any sort of playoff hopes year after year.

Not hating on Young. You can give constructive, honest feedback while also being 100% accurate. He could have a Bradley Beal-esque career. Make tons of money and stay with one team.

The Wizards just ended a six-year stretch where they missed the playoffs four times and haven’t won a playoff series.
