Mavs confident in Kyrie Irving returning, GM says he and Luka Dončić ‘work together’ | NBA | SPEAK

The Dallas Mavericks have some tough decisions to make this offseason, with one of them surrounding Kyrie Irving. The Mavs acquired him and sent draft picks, Dorian Finney-Smith and Spencer Dinwiddie to the Brooklyn Nets midseason. He joined Luka Dončić in the backcourt, but missed the playoffs. While Kyrie can become a free agent this offseason, Mavs’ General Manager Nico Harrison is optimistic on Kyrie wanting to return, adding quote: ‘I think Luka and [Kyrie] work together.’ Emmanuel Acho, Joy Taylor, Ric Bucher and David Helman discuss whether it is a good idea to run it back with Kyrie and Luka or not.

  1. 0:25 “one of the greatest” 0:47 “maybe the greatest”….by the time the time Michael Jordan was 3-5 years in the NBA, he was already the “undisputed greatest player to ever play basketball”. There was no “one of the greatest” or “maybe the greatest”. So for LeBron James to be 20 years in, and Acho, Nick Wright, and Shannon Sharpe are still trying to force LeBron James into a one-man conversation that has, is, and most likely be dominated by Michael Jordan, this proves that LeBron James failed to take the GOAT title from Michael Jordan. LeBron is so far past his prime, that using EPO will NEVER erase 6 NBA Finals losses. Never!

  2. The best version of KD is with Kyrie. What is he talking about? He's talking about the team. And can we stop the Boston BS. They were rookies

  3. I'm a spurs fan so I care less but joys nutz get off Kyries jock n Luka was n the conference finals last year he needs shooters around em and a lil more defense

  4. 😎😎😎😎Mavericks were the 4th seed before the Kyrie trade. How is this a dent in Luka's legacy? It obviously just shows, how terrible Mark Cuban has managed the team around Luka, especially when it was Mark Cuban, who has torn the Dallas team apart all of a sudden two months ago; and what is even worse is that this all happened in the middle of the season (february). What is even worse is that this same scenario has happened already two separate times in the last five years. So, it has not happened only one time, but actually two times already in the last five years (the Porzingis trade in february 2019 and the Kyrie trade in february 2023, when in both of these cases Dallas has given away half of their team roster and numerous picks for one All-star player in each of these two cases, and has therefore lost the entire depth and also all of the defence in both of these rosters. And on top of everything else, it all happened in the middle of the season in february in both of these cases).
And Joy, please stop with the false narrative that Luka is a player, who is difficult to build around, when it was just last year, when Dallas had the perfect fit for Luka on their team, which was Brunson. It was Mark Cuban who messed up the whole situation with Brunson, and NOT Luka. And it is also not Luka's fault that Dallas has not been able to deliver at least one above average elite defensive wing player to the team (and also at least one competent rim-protecting center) in the course of the last five years.
And Dallas also was not able to build a decent Championship type of team around Dirk in his 21 years of playing for the Dallas Mavericks (except for that one 2011 Championship team, which of course Mark Cuban also immediatelly tore apart right after they won the Championship. Mark Cuban therefore didn't let the team to get the opportunity to try to win it again the very next year with the same roster – with some team improvements in the off-season).
The Dallas Mavericks franchise is the most incompetent franchise in the history of the Nba, much worse than the Cleveland franchise in the first seven years of Lebrons career.

The Dallas franchise is literally self-imploding almost every single year. It is not Luka's fault, at all, for all of the Dallas failures in regards to building a decent and solid team (roster) around Luka, so please stop blaming Luka all of the time, and instead rather start blaming the delusional, incompetent and stupid Mark Cuban.

  5. If they give Kyrie a max deal of 4-5 years they won't have the money to get better on the defence so the team will be

    Luka
    Kyrie
and a bunch of min players

    welcome to the basement

  6. Unless they got some other plan that I don’t know about, all they need to do is resign Kyrie, get a guy that can play around the rim and defend, another defensive guy that can score and let’s play ball!

  7. 😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞Just tell me please one thing: Why didn't all of you mention your Lebron James as someone, who has missed the playoffs alot in his whole Nba career? (when you talked about Luka a few days ago, in regards of Luka missing this years playoffs)?

And if we are comparing Luka to Lebron: they both have the exact same number of the playoff appearances in their first five years of playing in the Nba: THREE TIMES. Lebron has also missed the playoffs FOUR times alltogether in his whole NBA career and he also almost missed the playoffs this year, eventhough he is playing with a solid good team and with a top 75 NBA player in Anthony Davies. Lebron has also managed to miss the playoffs for the first two years in the Nba, whereas Luka missed the playoffs only in his first year, and even that was only because Dallas had traded, at that time, their whole team away in the middle of the season (february) just to trade for an injured Porzingis (that was in Luka's first year in the month of february). And because Porzingis was still injured in that first Luka's year, the Mavericks couldn't count on him and therefore leaving poor Luka with some spare parts players for the last two months of his first year (after february trade deadline in Luka's rooky year).

The biggest irony is that this year the Dallas Mavericks did the exact same thing as with the Porzingis trade in 2019, when in current season, they traded their whole main team core and their whole team defence just for getting Kyrie on the team and have therefore gutted Luka's whole team for one player. And that player is a player that they didn't need at all, and who is the exact same type of player as Luka (meaning they both need the ball in their hands to be successfull).

And now the history obviously repeats itself again, when Luka will therefore, just because of a bad dumb miscalculated trade, be missing the playoffs for the second time in his career, and that is just because of the incompetence of Cuban (because Cuban once again has torn the team apart in it's entirety, and on top of everything else in the middle of the season), and certainly NOT because of Luka's hypothetical inability to drag a bad team to the playoffs. Afterall, Luka had a weak Dallas team sitting in the fourth place just a day before the Kyrie trade (that means just before they gave all the defence away for Kyrie, and therefore leaving them with an non-existant team defence). Dallas also made an awfull mistake and traded two solid players for only one player in Kyrie, and have therefore lost all the depth they had, which was already weak before the trade for Kyrie in february.

So, in these both two cases that Luka didn't get to the playoffs in his Nba career (two times alltogether), it was absolutelly not Luka's fault, but it was all Cubans fault, who is making all the basketball team decisions himself for the past 20 years, eventhough he doesn't have a clue about basketball or about building a competent Championship team. It is not Luka's fault for not making the playoffs in his two separate years in his five year NBA career, so please stop putting the blame on Luka, and finally start pointing fingers at Cuban for ruining Dirks career first, and now for ruining Luka's career also.

Jordan is almost the only one, who has never missed the playoffs (except for the final years in the Wizards), and yet he was also the one, who took a break from basketball for about two years in his prime.

And again, if we are comparing Luka to Lebron: they both have the exact same number of the playoff appearances in their first five years of playing in the Nba: THREE TIMES. And by the way, Lebron is supposed to be at least the number two player when it comes to GOAT conversation. But there is obviously nothing wrong with Lebron missing those two playoffs in his first five years in the NBA.

So, i really don't know what this negative fuss about Luka is all about, when Luka and Lebron both have the same number of playoff appearances in their first five years.

Why such a different approach in evaluating the success of two individual players? I really don't know of any reason, why Luka is all of a sudden measured and evaluated by much higher basketball standars than all of the other all time great basketball players. Very strange situation, indeed. I personally, of course, know exactly what the reason for the higher basketball standards for Luka is (there are actually two specific reasons). I will also not write them down, because i just do not wanna be deleted and cancelled.😎😎😎😎

  8. It’s ridiculous to use Lebron James “you can’t be 24 years old and say your tired. Lebron James is still playing “. Please. Stop.

  9. Irving can only follow Bron….the Best Ever..Irving better than most he played with after BronBron

  10. they missed the playoffs not because of Kyrie and Luka , Luka had a bad leg when Kyrie arrived in Dallas and Kyrie played with a bad foot , the problem was Jason Kidd being stubborn and stuck with Kleber , Bullock and Powell , those three were horrible .

  11. I wouldn’t want Kyrie on my team. He is too self absorbed. He’s not trustworthy. He’s a waste of money. Load management players couldn’t get my money.

  12. 😂😂😂😂Why did you compare Lebron's international performances to Lukas international performances, and has also said, that Luka doesn't have the excuse to play bad on the defensive end of the basketball game? Lebron in his whole basketball career has played only 3 times in international competitions: in 2004, in 2008, in 2012. Luka on the other hand, has played in 7 straight years for his country Slovenia already untill his 24 birthday, and is therefore way more tired and unable to play elite basketball on both ends of the floor. You can't compare Lebron to Luka in regards to playing basketball throughout the year, when Luka has been playing basketball literally 12 months per year (with only 10 days of vacation in between) every single year for the last 7 years in Luka's short career. Meanwhile Lebron James has played for his International basketball only four times in his entire whole 20 year long basketball career. That is a very big difference when you compare the enormous working load of Luka to the one Lebron has had (up untill their 24 birthday).

  13. 😂😎😂😎😞😞😂😂😎We seriously can not even try to compare Luka's teamates (except for Kyrie in this last two months) to Giannis's teamates in both of their careers. Luka has been playing with a G-league team for the past 5 years (Porzingis doesn't count, because he was always injured and has therefore been unavaible alot in those two years they played together). So, Luka was playing with a lottery team for the past 5 years and was still able to carry them to the Western Conference finals last year (and beating the number one ranked team Phoenix in the process) and also getting them to the playoffs every single year (except for his rooky year).

And about the International play: Listen, Luka started playing for Slovenia at a very early stage in his life, at 16 years old. At this age in Lebron's life, Lebron was playing with his highschool buddies. So Luka's international playing career is now at only 24 years, already very long (8 years, every year. And he is also expected to play for his home country every single year for years to come). Giannis, Jokic and Lebron can't even compare to Luka when it comes to the amount of playing time for their countries (especially Giannis and Jokic, who last year finally played for their countries after a very long time). And on top of everything else, Luka is also playing in the Qualifications for international competitions (every single year in June, in July and also in August, just to be able to qualify our small country to these important International competitions. So, Luka has every year only about ten days of resting time, which is unimaginable for any other player in the history of the NBA.

On top of all that, Luka has been playing professional basketball for 11 years now (since 13 years old when he was simultaniously attending highschool classes. At this age in Lebron's life, Lebron was carefree and playing basketball with his teenage peers in highschool environment- in highschool type competitions). These are huge differences between them (everything that i have written in this post).

Luka is only 24 years old and has already been playing international basketball and also professional basketball for 11 years now. All that combined takes a big toll on a player (mentally, emotionally and phisically (body)). And Luka is the only player who has been putting up with so much working load. Nobody else in the Nba (past or present) can even come close to him, when it comes to sacrificing his whole teenage youth and when it comes to sacrificing his whole personal free time for his basketball career and for playing for his home country Slovenia.

  14. I cant watch this after achos take.. Lebron makes role players better.. stars stay the same .. I’d argue they decline I.e Chris Bosh kevin love. Tatum was a baby when Kyrie was there and KD deff wasn’t worse when Kyrie was there, KD plays great with anyone .. 🤦‍♂️ 1:51

  15. Lebron has not made anybody better please gtfoh. Every player he ever linked with took a hit on their stat sheet. Lebron forces people out of their natural roles and turns them into to role players in his system. Sometimes it works if all the ingredients are there but most of the time it doesn’t work especially against a team with a REAL system.

  16. They are both iso players. How much time do they need to play together? Kyries good stats have dragged down the team stats in the past. Kyries points do not buy wins

  17. With Acho's first 1:30, he makes some sense. I'm just wandering if it's fair. I'd like to see 25 or more games to see if they can do better together.

  18. Kyrie is the veteran here who is still balling scoring 30-40 per game . He's going to do his thing while trying to get a contract. Luka already has his bag . I think he should do what it takes to win games even making asist to kyrie, rebounds, and driving to the basket himself.
