> But over the years, and specifically over the course of a tumultuous 2022-23 season, some key relationships within the organization became strained. Where he and management once seemed on the same page, they were no longer aligned. They didn’t always see eye to eye on the best way to hold players accountable or to develop the young guys at the end of the bench, who played sparingly on Nurse’s watch.
> There were also questions about his style of communication. Nurse would often call players out publicly without addressing his concerns with the player privately first, or in some cases at all. After a bad loss to Memphis in late December, Nurse held closed-door individual meetings with players and members of his staff that were described to TSN as “intense” and “confrontational.” According to sources, after an altercation early in the New Year, Nurse sent an assistant coach home and told him not to accompany the team on an upcoming road trip, without the prior knowledge or permission of Ujiri. The assistant missed one game and Ujiri later smoothed things over but the relationship between the coaches was described as “tense” for the duration of the season.

someone find the game where an assistant coach was missing

This makes for the 2nd time an altercation has involved Nick Nurse and a Raptors staffer/player (that we know of)…
Obviously this doesn’t mean there’s more incidents than just these two for certain but…not a good look either way.

With the drama that happened with Nate Bjorkgren and the Pacers, and how quick he came back to the raps after that, I guess Nurse was kind of a mirco manager by the sounds of it. He clearly lost the room

Need the story of pascal putting nick in a full Nelson in tampa

All this drama and dysfunction happened and we were still buyers at the trade deadline as the 9th seed. Amazing

and people are still going to say that we shouldn’t have fired him. being a coach in the nba means you need to manage personalities and not be an asshole. nick was on a power trip.

A general lack of people skills from him this year. I wondered how well those criticisms of players worked; evidently not at all.

For a team that “doesn’t leak” I don’t love this scapegoating of NN by the front office. Nasty work.

The floodgates have opened.

Front office releasing anything they can find to show they made the right decision

Why does he need Masai’s permission here? Seems pretty reasonable

Let Nurse leave in peace man. Great coach but we lost our brilliant assistants over the years. Sergio Scariolo, Phil Handy and a few others. I felt like our assistants other than Griffin were bad this year.
We need hard nosed guys mixed with brilliant minds to get this roster back to developing

the power got to him. Really miss the humble NN, not the egotistical tyrant he became
dread-it
In his gym talk thing in Hungary he talked about how he had an issue with his coaching staff and how he had to deal with it. He didn’t go into detail though so it’s highly speculative.

Off topic question, any idea who / what the older gentlemen on the second row of the bench does? Caucasian guy, older, white hair and black glasses. Super friendly guy, I sat behind the bench during the raps Knicks game in January and he gave me a score sheet.

**David Thorpe on Nick Nurse, Feb 11:**
> “… I thought he was amazing in 2019, they got their [Coach] Pop. I was wrong. He’s not Pop. He rubs people the wrong way…he’s a weird dude…. But it’s not working. I would fire him right now, and bring in Earl Watson.”
