The Raptors Could Be Making HISTORY With Their Head Coach

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on the Toronto Raptors’ coaching search and revealed a number of candidates that the Raptors have gotten permission to speak with, most notably, Becky Hammon of the WANBA’s Las Vegas Aces was listed.

Becky Hammon served as an assistant under Gregg Popovic at the San Antonio Spurs for eight years before moving on to coach the Las Vegas Caes where in her first season as head coach shes won coach of the year as well as the WNBA championship.

Many Hall of Fame NBA talent have endorsed Hammon’s coaching abilities such as Paul Gasol, but is it enough for her to get the head position on an NBA franchise? Masai Ujiri seems to be providing her the opportunity to make her case.

Others on the list were Kenny Atkinson of the Golden State, Charles Lee of the Milwaukee Bucks, Kevin Young of the Phoenix Suns, Mitch Johnson of the San Antonio Spurs, Jordi Fernandez of the Sacramento Kings, Darko Rajakovic of the Memphis Grizzlies, and Chriss Quinn of the Miami Heat. It’s important to note that Adrian Griffin, current Raptors assistant, is also a leading candidate to take on the role.

So what does or does not qualify Becky Hammon for an NBA head coaching position? This video breaks down her candidacy. The Raptors have a chance to make her the first female head coach in NBA history.

  1. I trust Masai to make the right call. If that's Hammon, ok. If not, ok. Brains and attitude are what matter not gender or race.

  2. agreed with everything you said in this video, becky hammon should not be looked as a female coach coaching on a mens team, and should be treated just like any other coaches that are being interviewed, depending on what masai plans to do with the roster and if we will rebuild then i think becky has the coaching experience to lead this team but if masai is looking to build up the team to have them competing then i probably would look for someone else. NO matter the gender if they have proven they can coach they deserve a chance

  3. Folks! if Becky can draw out winning plays/strategies and win us games… that's all that matters. I have experience working with men and women… only thing that matters is results. If best candidates is Jerry, fine. If it's Becky, that okay as well. I want a chip, don't care if we have an all-women coaching staff.

  4. I don’t know if Becky
Gammon is what the raptors need right now in order to do better. May she would be a better fit for another team

  5. Becky Hammon is a good coach, it just depends on the situation, Raps looking like they wanna make a splash in headlines by hiring the 1st woman head coaching position in the NBA than winning NBA Championships, maybe they know their ceiling or have gone entirely woke!

  6. Ime Udoca said Raptors are too woke even though he was close to old woke Pop – Will raptors get even Woker? – they put BLM on their bus in Tempa…

  7. Gender has no issue with being a coach! That should not even talked about, obviously she's extremely smart in the field, plain and simple. Locker room would adapted.

  8. A well reasoned argument. I can always count on you to provide a well reasoned discussion, and get past all the hype. To be honest, I had never heard of Becky Hammon before now. I was nervous about a WNBA coach moving to the NBA. However, anyone who was an assistant to Gregg Popovich for 8 seasons deserves serious consideration for a head coaching position.
Furthermore, for those who believe you can't take your experience coaching in the women's game to the men, I would suggest you look at John Herdman., coach of the Mens National Soccer Team. Yes, he is a man, but he spent years coaching women's soccer, with no real experience coaching men, before becoming the best coach we've ever had.
Our past two coaches, Nurse and Casey, both won Coach of the Year, so she has some big shoes to fill. Yet, objectively, if she is the best candidate, I have no problem with them being women's shoes.

  9. We pass up on Griffin and Jerry Stackhouse to give a chance a assistant coach on the worst team in the league . That sounds like bs media is pushing … noway Masai gives Becky chance before Griffin or even Stackhouse..

  10. She's always been a winner, similar story to Fred undrafted, undersized point guard, won at all levels. I think I prefer Kenny Atkinson as Raps are not ready to win yet. Maybe after a couple years she could be the coach that leads them to a championship.

  11. She worked under popp for 8 years and she has something to prove in the NBA – I bet she will do amazing, Let make history!!

  12. I don't believe the hype…and I don't think any of the names being bandied about by Woj will ultimately be chosen by the Raptors. Since he was 0-3 in his other head coaching "bombs" this season (Ime to Brooklyn, Nurse to Houston, and Ime to Toronto), it seems he decided to cast a wider net this time. Notice that he also hedged in this report with this sentence that no one is talking about: "The Raptors are requesting permission to talk to other assistant coaches, too, sources said."

  13. Becky Hammon could be what the Raptors have needed. She comes from a legendary coaching tree (9 of the last 10 Finals have had at least one coach from said tree) from the debated GOAT NBA coach in Gregg Popovich. But I think what she will bring most is the chip on her shoulder. She has been looked over so many times despite the recommendations, and so if she got the job she would be driven to succeed to prove those teams who passed on her how wrong they were to do so. That would mean maximizing the potential of the roster. The issues that came out this year – lack of development, our young guns coasting instead of working hard, etc. – would become a personal affront to her, and she wouldn’t allow it to continue. This could be the culture shift that the Raptors need to get back to being elite again.

  14. You have to love all the Fanboy Snowflakes getting triggered so easily about a rumour. Damn it is entertaining.

  15. Our mother couch us to be great poweerful men, she will do just fine and the boys will play hard for her, like we work hard for our mother's 😊
