The Toronto Raptors might have a new head coach, on Thursday afternoon Bleacher Report reported that Masai Ujiri and the Toronto Raptors reached out to the Las Vegas Aces to inquire about talking and interviewing Becky Hammon, this comes just one week after the Raptors fired their previous head coach Nick Nurse. and it’s no surprise because after the Raptors were eliminated from the playoffs a few weeks ago their president Masai Ujiri stated that major changes would be coming for the Toronto Raptors and that is much needed because the Toronto Raptors have been subpar for the better part of the last three years. but this news was met with varying reactions because if Becky were to be hired by the Raptors she would be the first woman to ever be hired as a head coach in the NBA and that would be huge for the Raptors and the NBA. Some skeptics in the Toronto Raptors fanbase have voiced their opposition to this because they feel that her being a woman would impede on her capability to gain the respect of the players on the team, But i disagree because Becky Hammon has a long track record of being around the game of basketball, she played in the WNBA and she coached under Greg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs. so she has the credentials to be a head coach in the NBA, also Players that have been coached by her have only spoken highly of her, but it is worth mentioning that if certain players disagreed with the way she coached they would be allowed to voice their opinions due to the risk of being called “misogynistic” and getting canceled. But I would not be disappointed if she were hired because personally I’m a big proponent of meritocracy, I don’t like when workplaces hired due to anything aside from the candidate’s ability to do the job, is essentially identity politics because I believe that hiring by this method only jeopardizes the quality of the work that is done. I believe we should always give opportunities to those that are qualified for the job. and Becky Hammon is qualified, and the Toronto Raptors think so too because they can’t afford to make token hires with the way the Raptors have been for the past few years.ESPN First Take
