I think it’s two things.
1) he’s mostly irrelevant to most the nba. Sure he put up #s but he really has no impact on the league overall and no one’s worried about the hawks. There much more fun players to watch for the casual fan.
2) he beat us in the playoffs and us Knicks fans love to hold a grudge and develop our villains so we think he’s more hated than he is. No he isn’t close to the Reggie Miller tier of villain and not really close yet, but after just one playoff series he’s my disliked player in the league easily.
