I don’t know if anyone has made this point on Nick Nurse’s mad scientist approach to basketball but regular season and play-off basketball are two very different animals.
Recent Raptors teams were all about play-off basketball.
Prior Raptors teams with Casey had similar outcomes to Bud’s Bucks teams.
They had dominant regular seasons but when the play-offs start, the game got more physical and referees put their whistles away (we’ll save preferential whistles for another time).
The Derozan-era Raptors seasons ended with embarrassing collapses where players spent a lot of time throwing tantrums over officiating and Derozan getting ejected for raging over not getting regular season whistles.
If you watched the post-Kawhi Raptors, Nurses’ approach to the regular season was getting a 7 man rotation ready for the post-season.
This meant playing a very physical brand of basketball, playing starters heavy minutes, and leaving players not seen worthy of play-off minutes to rot on the bench.
Obviously, the experiment ended his Raptors tenure but I’m curious to see if he continues to tweak this idea on his next team.
