You could argue positionless voting makes it really hard for guards, but that’s a less believable argument after a guard just “won” DPOY last year. At the same time, a lot of these guys like Caruso, younger CP3, Pat Bev are stud defenders …… for guards, but would just be nowhere to be found on ballots if there were extra spaces for guys like Herb Jones, Jaden, Giannis
it also feels like making it “defensive position” isn’t fair because of how switchy and controlling offenses are. Maybe defensive position with some minimum threshhold for possessions guarding that position such as 30% ? idk hard problem to solve unless you’re willing to give up on guards altogether

I don’t think it should be positionless but having a “non big” (primary 1, 2, and 3) and “big” (primary 4 and 5) breakdown would probably work well more often than not. It won’t be perfect but would be sufficient.
I know the new CBA rules make the all-nba team positionless. They should do the same with all defensive too. Jaden getting snubbed disgusts me.

The way positions are used and body shapes change over time. Sports like baseball, NFL, netball have set positions which dictate what you can and can’t do. In basketball, anyone can do anything.
