The Ringer’s NBA Draft Show: Outside perspective on the Wiz, Both hosts say Washington have the most to lose headed into the lottery.

The convo starts around the (9:45) mark and ends around (19:00)

Here are the cliff notes:

– Touched on the Wiz being in the weirdest predicament potentially having three max players and how that will effect their draft strategy. They think the Wiz should still go best player available.
– Mentions the GM position still being open and although there’s only 30 GM spots they ask the question, how attractive is the Washington job knowing the owner has a playoff mandate? Points out that Leonsis not being willing to take steps back (I.e rebuild) it’s a hard sell.
– Shoots Tommy Sheppard some bail but also points out how he whiffed on all his draft picks.
– Thought Deni Avdija was worth the swing at 9. They still have him trending towards a whiff overall due to lack of consistency on the offensive end.
– Called Rui Hachimura a “worthy risk” considering their middle approach. Again, another whiff because he didn’t pan out to be starter level.
– Call’s Beal’s contract “one of the worst in all of basketball”
– Said it feels like the Wiz are “treading water” as opposed to being in the middle. A lot of teams around them are positioning themselves better and are about to pass them.
– Come to the conclusion that if they don’t move into the Top 4 then they are the team with the most to lose. Hard to get out of the spot they are in picking 7-8-9 range.
– They mock Casson Wallace to Washington at 8.

  1. They aren’t wrong but if we get No. 8 and pick Cason, I wouldn’t even be mad

Agree with pretty much all of this except the Wiz having “the most to lose” because IMO this team already has no expectations and is being counted out by everyone. We’re the Washington Wizards bruh. That said I’ll apply to be Wiz GM.

I’d be very surprised if Ted still has a playoff mandate.

This is the big one for me. Even if we made the playoffs this year, I wouldn’t be surprised if Charlotte and Indiana end up being better than us next season.
