I’d be thrilled to have Monty back, but is Pop ever going to retire? I’m not convinced he won’t outlast me.

As much as itd be amazing to have Monty back, he’s not gonna last as a free agent. Toronto or Bucks probly gonna pick him up.

These teams are hella dumb. Phoenix literally had a finals team and two second round exits, one of which was expected (they weren’t beating Denver this year with an injured CP and no continuity from Durant).
Imagine if the Spurs fired Pop after their first and second round exits in 2000 and 2002, or after their two first round exits in 2009 and 2011.
Would the Spurs have gotten 4 more titles from a different coach?
Hell, even look at the heat. They missed the playoffs 3 times after the big three and kept Spo on as their coach and now they’ve made it back to the conference finals for the third year out of 4.
These title or bust teams (suns/bucks) firing good coaches are missing the big picture, especially when you look at who they are losing to (teams with long tenured coaches who have had playoff disappointments but weren’t fired by a reactionary owner/management group.
Fucking so glad the spurs weren’t like that, hope BWright carries that forward when Pop steps down in another 20 years or so

Monty earned his release, it shouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone that it was coming. He made some bonehead moves and to me it sort of seemed like he resigned himself to the team not having a bench or suitable players and this was all ok because the KD trade gutted them. He didn’t really work to find matchups or bench minutes that worked.
If he were to have Pop working in a Pat Riley type of position, whispering in his ear the whole time (and if his ego would allow it) then he’d turn the corner. Spols was very good at learning from Riley and now he is a top coach and that team culture is awesome. Monty isn’t going to be next level without someone like Pop helping him see what he isn’t seeing.
Playing CP3 37 mpg in the playoffs had a predictable outcome don’t you think
