Boston Celtics lose to Miami Heat in Game 1 of ECF thanks to disastrous 3rd quarter

The Boston Celtics were looking pretty good through the first half of Game 1, but then the third quarter happened and the Celtics could never recover. John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal discusses the Celtics lax attitude vs. Miami’s never say die approach, Joe Mazzulla’s non-timeout, and the Celtics right back in a place they’re very familiar with.

  1. Let’s be real, we all knew Celtics were going to lose game 1. Doesn’t matter if it’s the Heat. Doesn’t matter if it’s the Magic. This is just what it is with this team

  2. Also sick of people trying to blame Joe and his lack of timeouts (even though he did take a timeout which was then followed by the Heat continuing what they were doing). The players need to be held accountable. Its a weak, lazy take to try and blame the coaching experience disparity for this game. Spo didn't make some huge adjustment at halftime, the Heat just pushed up their intensity and stopped turning the ball over. Pair that with the Cs going cold in the third and the Heat shooting over 50% from 3 in the game, along with Tatum's just disintegration at the end of the game and you got yourself a loss. Now its time for the Cs to get off the mat, win game two, and then steal at least one in Miami.

  3. Love to see the cocky and arrogant Boston fans have to snivel and whine about the Heat 🤣🤣🤣

  4. Mazzula is an effine joke. The C's would have not passed the 6ers if Mazulla did not listeed to the players on how to coach.

  5. Really enjoy these daily shows John. I know that’s hard to do. But a little understanding of human psychology would go a long way – because you keep saying “should happen” which implies expected behavior.

Every bit of evidence gets you a bit closer. You now state things on the show discussed during last year’s playoffs.

The same traits that make this team great with their backs against the wall are what cause these let downs. They can’t be separated. They’re inherent personality traits.

Changing behavior is exceptionally hard. It takes intense, prolonged environmental conditioning. They’ve made progress over the past 3 seasons, but it’s not a “switch” that will suddenly flip.

If they win the title it’ll be the way they’ve been doing it.

  6. Always appreciate your stand point and views after our games, John. Sadly that third quarter ended all momentum and despite our hard work in the fourth, turnovers were predictable and repetitive in game one. Gotta keep positive, let's dust off and go again. ☘️💚🏀

  7. You knew it was coming because you know you were arrogant.

    "Pride comes before the fall"

  8. Hello Good sir Heat fan here . I always listen to the locked on of the opponents our squad face to get some different analysis. Love the heat Celtics crossover by the way. That being said , after listening to your segment today I am 10 times more confident Miami got this because of one thing underestimation. I watched 70 percent of Miami's game this year and while I don't have your expertise on identifying basketball talents, those "undrafted players" play a systemic , synchronized brand of basketball with a whole lot discipline and heart. And they went through the grinder this season. Every win was repetition of how they must play, every game whether it was Detroit or Denver was close. You didn't see that and that will always beat "talent." Celtics does not have that and at some point fatigue sets in, frustration, ego and the Heat will seize and capitalize on that. Heck even your coach was not keeping his cool 😂 and tossed his clipboard on the floor. The lack of respect for these guys work ethic and skill sets is unbelievable by EVERYONE. And the Celtics players by default cannot bring themselves to rise up to the challenge , the level of attention they need to pay to each players because of media personnel like you! 😂😂😂 Who do not respect these Miami heat players. It's Ironic 😂. But hey may the best "team" win to quote Himmy Butler .

  9. I am just going to tell myself that despite how bad we all think the Celtics were in game one, and I think we would agree that outside of a stretch in the second they were bad; it still took the Heat shooting 51.6% from three, a 46-point third quarter, and one of the all-time worst Tatum end of game collapses for the Cs to lose by 7.

  10. Couple takeaways from someone who watched every single Celtic playoff game and knows basketball :

Malcolm has complete tunnel vision with the ball 90% of the time. Tatum and Brown are open countless times when Brogdon has it and you can see them physically annoyed via body language when he doesn’t even look their way

Joe needs to figure out a way to beat the zone. Professional basketball players not being able to score against a zone is pathetic. Everyone stands around and iso balls maybe 1 cut per possession.

    This team is so unserious.

  11. These Celtics drives you crazy. Even when the results don't even surprise me. You always hope that they learn to not screw around and put the other team away. No excuses on giving up almost fifty points in a quarter. What's up with these bone headed passes just gifting away points. Baffling one game they look really really good than look a clueless g league team the next… Sickening..

  12. Also John I think entitled is the wrong word, I would go with over confident. I don't think its a "we deserve this win so we don't have to try hard thing" as much as a "we can not give our 100% and still win" mentality. Also bad.

  13. even though Tatum had 3 turnovers in a row, I’m putting this loss on Mazzula. WHY ARE THESE LINEUPS SO ATROCIOUS?? Put Grant Williams in, instead of having a lineup of Pritchard and White when all the heat were doing was getting Jimmy switched on the smaller GUARD. The ENTIRE series it needs to be JB, JT, or smart defending Jimmy and don’t switch off and if it for some reason does, that’s what Grant is there for he can defend Jimmy very well. And why wasn’t Rob in the game towards the end. The timeouts were not being properly used but that’s not why we lost the 3rd quarter it’s because the smaller defenders kept getting switched on to Jimmy and wanted to keep bringing doubles and the ball found the WIDE OPEN shooter. Fix the lineups and stop switching on the Butler screens and keep the our main 3 defenders on him and I think we win

  14. Yeah John’s timeout take is WILD. Not all timeouts are created equally especially when a team tends to let go of the rope. Maybe that would be a time to refocus early on in the run on defensive principles… but hey I’m not an NBA coach or ex player

  15. Coaches get teams ready to play the right way. If the players don’t listen it’s on the coach. You make them listen. You play someone who does listen. Talent without discipline is a loser strategy. It leads to exhaustion as you try to make up for mistakes. Use more bench.

  16. Heat came in yiur house robbed yiu with the lights on and the cops watching!! Heat in 6 lets go heat 🔥🔥🔥

  17. Tatum always lose a game in the playoffs, just like he always win a game in the playoffs. Giving up 46pts in the third and still had a chance to win. Go Celtics! Celtics in 6!

  18. I think Karalis asked gr8 questions in the post game conference, I paid attention to who asked the best questions that day to give us a glimpse in how much the players especially JT seem like they don’t learn from previous losses like this where you have it but let go of it and there were way too many for a Championship team. We all know Tatums personality is kicked back but at one point as the best player enough is enough and the fact that he adored and followed Kobe as much as he did you would think the mindset is similar especially after losses and not the only similar thing between them is only the kind of hard shots they take that they also make to. But that may be wrong on my thinking but anyways it doesn’t help when you’re coach never learns from his mistakes either, call a timeout to stop a run, give the guys a breather and regroup like you can’t make this shi up how talented they are and they know they are you can tell how they feel like they can turn it on any month and only championship winning teams should ever feel like that tho that’s not the kind of basketball that should be played. Sorry guys it’s so unrealistic to expect a team with these tendencies to win banner 18. Normally championship teams steal games they aren’t supposed to win not consistently give them up and if they do they usually learn and minimize the mistakes they made to do so not do it literally after every important win, championship teams carry that momentum after games like game 7 in these playoffs this team hasn’t even won 3 games in a row and even if it is hard to do that they don’t carry momentum enough to close a team out the first chance they get the series always extends because they make the same mistakes from last year. I get it different coach who shouldn’t have even been the coach even if udoka left the jazz coach will hardy was allowed to leave right before Udoka left and he’s a clearly better coach then mazulla. I think mazulla has really good potential as a coach in the future but for a championship or bust team he’s not the right guy for the job and wants to be friends with the players and not hold them accountable, I get if you aren’t extremely tough on your players like udoka was but at some point you put your big boy pants on and make your team know whose in charge and have the guys know they can believe and lean on you rather then them just saying it because it looks good. Veterans like this can tell if a coach is leading the ship especially this core from having so many coaches so they’ll call bs when they smell it and do things like not stick to the gameplan all the way and lose focus. It’s sad because this team is talented to win this year but unfortunately you can’t give up games in the playoffs and expect to force game 7’s and win every series a team like Miami whose disciplined, well
Coached, plays together will take advantage of your mistakes and with what we’ve seen you can count on jimmy both halves every game can’t say the same for JT. All well you have to go off for what you see and can’t continue to delude yourself of saying this team will turn it around and play their best basketball in terms of for a stretch and a couple of games. Talent kept us this far and all regular szn we’ve had the same fixable problems in the playoffs

  19. Smart and Rob Williams were the only two that played well yesterday. Jaylen Brown continues to turn the ball over because hes always looking to score instead making a play for someone else. When he finally does decide to pass no one is expecting it so it results in a turnover. Tatum needs to demand the ball more and Mazzulla needs to put him in better positions to score. Horford has been terrible these playoffs shooting the 3 when coming into the playoffs he was leading the league in 3-point shooting percentage. Hes getting good looks just needs to knock them down. Brogdon should not be our primary defender on the other team's best perimeter scorer. Not sure why Mazzulla doesnt see Brogdon constantly getting cooked. And lastly why was Pritchard in the game last night?

  20. Nobody seems to understand that "the others" worked on their games from last season to improve. Gabe Vincent was a total liability last year that was easy to exploit, especially on the defensive end. This year, he absorbed everything he could from Lowry on both ends of the court and that's why he's a starter now. He's a Marchand type pest on defense. He's not the same guy as last year. Same with Martin and Strus. Martin improved on both ends. Last year he looked lost and tentative. This year he is more decisive and we get more from his athleticism. Is he a complete player? By no means, but definitely improved. Last year, Strus was almost strictly a 3-point shooter. Now he goes inside more and improved his medium. He improved his defense. Lowry accepted his backup role and Love makes teams blink at inopportune times and opens things up for others. Bam now has a reliable medium range shot that makes teams think. It's not just Butler anymore.

  21. Why not continue to play the 2 big line-up in the 2nd half when it was successful in the 1st? 🤷‍♀️

  22. Heat are a very discipline team. Gotta bury them because they're not gonna beat themselves, unlike sixers

  23. Celtics fans, do y'all think the guys trust Joe as the HC? 🤔 I heard some of his comments in a timeout. He was fired up, but the players didn't seem to match his energy.

  24. Every team remaining in the Conference Finals are undefeated at their home court: Nuggets 7-0, Lakers 6-0, Heat 5-0. The Celtics are 4-4. Can't win a Championship if you can't defend your home.

  25. It’s my fault, I paused at half time to make something to eat .
That and trying to skip 4 hours of commercials/ commentary’s .
    Go Celtics !

  26. Should we not play Grant Williams more this series? Feels like brogdon and PP just got hunted by Jimmy everytime down the floor. Jimmy can’t back Grant down the same way as he does the guards??

  27. Scouting report for facing the Celtics: “let them get 10 points ahead so in the 4th quarter they can just stop playing with a brain. Then we can just take the game.”
