Brian Wright on ESPN: “you have to be patient… we want to continue to grow with this group… but we want to do it in a very deliberate, precise and cautious way”

Really interesting comment from 2:10 onwards after Bobby Marks asks him about “retooling the roster”

Starts with “Our staff did a tremendous job of preparing for the opportunity if we were lucky enough to have that”.

Then goes onto say that “We’ve learned in studying that you do have to be patient, you don’t want to put yourself in a position where you have to unwind a lot of mistakes when you move too fast”.

My personal takeaways from that:

WE ARE NOT MAKING DUMBASS WIN-NOW TRADES. This needs to keep getting shouted so people can stop posting stupid names or mock trades. We know how to build a contender, and we want to do it the right way to get a team that can hopefully contend for 5-10 years around our young pieces, and knowing we have a bunch of future assets to help build around them over the years. We aren’t throwing that chance away.

Another interesting tidbit – when Timmy played in summer league in ’97 – Pop asked Monty Williams and Corey Alexander (3rd & 4th year vets at the time) to play as well coz he didn’t want Timmy to play just with rookies. (Interestingly, Timmy has spoken about Monty being one of his biggest mentors early on). Wright basically jokingly implied that that’s up to Pop whether Vic will player summer league and whether he will asks some of the younger vets to play with him.

he also said that the goal is to build a young team around Wemby. emphasis on young.

which I’m all in favor of. trading all our assets for one of those aging playoff failures would be dumb as hell and not really help much either.

build the team up, develop talent, go for trades if you can get a good and young player.

It’s pretty evident the Spurs are willing to take a feel out year with Wemby before we make any big moves.

People like that guy yesterday who made a whole ass dissertation about us trading two 1sts for Caruso and Malaki and 3 more 1sts for OG are insane. Spurs have literally never made “all-in” type trades, especially in one summer, like that during anytime in our history.

Much like a fine brisket, we should cook this thing low and slow for a better result rather than rush it and serve an underwhelming product.

Wait does this mean the spurs won’t trade Keldon for Embiid?????????? /s

Got to do what the Thunder are doing and not the Mavs.

I’ve been thinking about a good young point guard to pair with Wemby and I think the Spurs should try and get Tyrese Haliburton. Idk what the Pacers would want for him but I imagine it won’t be light but I also don’t think it’ll be too much. Don’t go all in but maybe a future 1st and a player?

I do wanna see them be aggressive but in a smart way, trading up in the draft while this year has a lot of good prospects and a good way to cash in some future draft capital

This is the right mindset and I’m glad they’re going to slow play it.

The fan meltdowns are going to be something to watch. People are going to freak when they don’t compete immediately.

The core of their team is going to be ~19-22. Teams don’t win that young. We’re 4-5 years away, but at least there’s a path.

I get the feeling they are going to trade into another lottery pick honestly. With both houston and portland exploring the possibility we can find ourselves in a three team trade for someone looking to trade up in the draft.

Old school Spurs with no big moves coming back?
