In this installment of the Grind City Media 2023 NBA Mock Draft, Kelcey Wright Johnson is joined by Andy Larson representing the Utah Jazz. While discussing the team’s needs and draft strategy, Andy mentions that during the season the point guard position was a notable area of need as Colin Sexton was injured and they lacked a player who could take control of the ball. However, Andy notes that the team’s general manager, Danny Ainge, emphasized the need for more overall talent rather than a specific position.
Given the best player available approach, Andy selects Taylor Hendricks from UCF with the ninth pick. He praises Hendricks’ defensive skills, comparing him to Memphis’ Jaren Jackson Jr. in terms of his ability to impact plays from the weak side and block shots. Hendricks is described as mobile, long, and possessing a good three-point shot, shooting nearly 40% from beyond the arc. Andy believes Hendricks would be a versatile defender, capable of playing multiple positions and even some center. While his ball-handling skills may need development, Andy sees him as a potential helpful NBA role player who can contribute on both ends of the floor.
