Reports: The Lakers Could Trade Down From #17 in the NBA Draft. Smart Idea or Not?

Reports indicate the Lakers might be willing, or even could be seeking, to trade down from the 17th pick in next week’s NBA Draft, in order to pick up a few more bites at the Draft apple. That could mean acquiring extra picks this year, or down the road. It might mean drafting more players to try and fill out the back of the roster, and create a pipeline to fill in holes as the Lakers continue through, and then move beyond, the LeBron James/Anthony Davis core.

Of course, there has also been chatter that the Lakers could choose to trade the pick for someone who could theoretically help them faster. Indiana’s Buddy Hield is a name that comes up a lot.

How the Lakers choose to handle the Draft is also impacted by the idea that while most teams do struggle to find rotation caliber players at the end of the first round and into the second, the Lakers have a really good track record. So even if it’s not for this season, the idea the team wouldn’t be able to find good talent doesn’t really match the historical record.

These decisions are also impacted by the new CBA, which has more punitive penalties for big spending that go beyond just taxes. Teams lose very valuable strategic flexibility, and that is meant to keep teams, including the Lakers, from going HAM on salaries.

For teams that always expect to pay stars (that would be this one, for sure) those cheaper, cost controlled players are that much more valuable. Big trades could impact how the Lakers approach things, too. Brad Beal might be on his way out in Washington, and while a trade won’t send him to the Lakers, it could have ripple effects that impact the summer’s free agent sweepstakes.

So things are complicated!

Finally, a listener has a suggestion for LeBron James, and how much he should play next season. How realistic is his plan? Or any plan, for that matter?

  1. Jeanie, Rob, the Rambi need to stop fking around and trade the #17 pick and Beasley for Bogdanovic.

  2. Trade back especially if thier scouting list goes 8-10 players deep at 17. I can see there are at least 5-7 good prospects that can be available at 17 so trading back is great but not necessary especially if a big prospect slip down to 17.

  3. We need to target role players who can play more than a third star.

Sign Naz Reid, Josh Rich , Patty Mills and Javale McGee.

    Trade DLo for Trent Jr.

Groom AR to be the main point guard.

  4. Trade down only if Lakers no 1 or no 2 player is gone after 16 Rd. If no1 or no1 is there in Rd 17 take the pick.

  5. The show i want you guys to do:
Are LeBron and AD worth the money?

Should LeBron and AD do a Harden and sign for less in the interest of team building?
If LeBron really wants to win that's a no-brainer. He's already almost a billionaire. Right now his choice is an extra 20 million or a much better chance of a championship. Which does he pick?

  6. Lakers drafted players without any trades.
    1. Dlo
    2. Hart
    3. Randle
    4. Ball. … if healthy
    5. Ingram
    6. Nance Jr
    7. Clarkson
    8. Zubac
    9. Christie
    10. Kuzma
    11. Jaden McDaniels
    12. DeAndre Hunter
    Starting lineup:
    Ball
    Ingram
    Kuzma
    Randle
    Zubac
    Bench:
    Dlo
    Clarkson
    Hart
    Hunter
    McDaniels
    Nance Jr
    Christie

  7. Absolutely if they can either:
    A) get 2 picks in late first or even 1 first and early 2nd
    B) pick up a rotation player alongside a draft pick

Indiana could be a great trade partner. 26/29/32 are interesting and potentially to pick up Buddy Hield or Chris Duarte who had a down year but is a team controlled 6’6 guard/wing who can shoot by reputation.

You still have some NBA ready and top end potential in that range. Picking up Dariq Whitehead, Maxwell Lewis, Andre Jackson, Jett Howard, Jaime Jaquez Jr., GG Jackson, Trayce Jackson-Davis, Kris Murray, Leonard Miller, Rayan Rupert and Noah Clowney. You can take 1 upside player and one older more NBA ready (eg Kris Murray which is more NBA ready and GG Jackson or Dariq Whitehead which more upside gambles).

  8. Sign and trade for Dlo! We have seen his level on the wcf…
No defense….and no shooting at all
SnT to get a wing or a guy like kyrie

  9. I'd trade #17 and Beasley to the Utah Jazz for Kelly Olynyk, #28 (*draft Sidy Cissoko, Brandin Podziemski, or Dariq Whitehead), and a future 2nd rd pick.

  10. If bron comes back looks like lakers woukd trade this pick for a veteran to help out with the load and Mintues.

  11. Statitiscly speaking…the Lakers generally don't keep their draft picks. I agree Andy…we are constantly in a win now mode. Regardless of all the exhausting rumors and "woj" reports… you guys are right. I would still like cp3 n that's da only way I would trade da 17 pick
