Considering he shoots just 36.6% from 16 feet to within the three point line, no. That’s an abysmal 0.732 points per possession. I hope he gets better at mid range shots because an in between game would make him even more unstoppable.

Both Jays should take more high percentage mid range shots of they are left open. Almost every team leaves them open because they’re considered “inefficient” by analytics but if you can hit them at a high % then it’s great because it opens so much more. The obsession with 3 or layup makes teams significantly easier to defend.

Didn’t he lead the league in total points?
The fact that he only lead in one zone tells me he gets buckets from anywhere.

Tatum takes way too many 3s. Not only that he does his step back 3 which is extremely difficult 2-3 times a game. If his shooting over 40% or on fire for a particular game it’s fine. I’m not sure what the deal is with how many 3s he takes(coming from offensive sets, coaching, or he just likes to shoot from deep) but someone needs to get in his ear about this. I’m sure some advanced statistician will say he should shoot more 3s lol

Jays gotta learn a playoff specific two man game that involve more midranges. They could both be great doing that
Happy_Yogurtcloset_2
We have a superstar now, middies are what breaks zones and gets you deeper into the playoffs. I know analytics folks like Brad and Joe aren’t a fan, but you gotta change things up

I think he should take a bit more and some post ups. He is stronger than people give him credit for.
I don’t mind some of the 3s, but the ISO ones at the top of the key make me so annoyed. I’d like to see plays for him to catch and shoot more. Just dial down the volume of them a bit, he is a good shooter…but the way he is doing so is not the best.

Two years ago the problem with JT’s shot profile was too many 2s. now people complain about too many 3s. i don’t really think it’s the shot profile per se as much as jt’s capacity to mix it up dynamically in reponse to how he’s being defended that will bring him to the next level. wouldn’t want him to regress to being a midrange hero like ddr but taking some of those shots against defenses like eg the heat’s zone down the clutch would be ok. but mostly the shot profile is good and the stats back that up
edit: like another poster said some more post ups would be good and is part of this too. not all the time — he is one of the best scorers in the league bc of his wickedly efficient shot profile. but he should feel more comfortable mixing that in

This is just most points by zone. Not effiency. So no

Let him? My brother in Christ you think he cares what we think?
Wishiwasaballerbaby
no pretty simple he’s inefficient from midrange it’s not surprising he had his most efficient year while pretty much eliminating the midrange shot from his game.
Jpgamerguy90
His game is fine, what he needs to stop doing is taking those dipshit 3s when he and the defender are connected on a molecular level. He’s fine when the shots are actually “good” shots but he tends to take some terrible attempts at times. He’d probably be a 38%-40% 3 point shooter if he cut his bad attempts in half and just took better ones.

Not a single Nugget? Shows the diversity of their scoring in that case, which should be our goal as well.
Koloss_Grace
If he can hit the midrange, I’d say take it. Just don’t take the midrange too often unless you’re derozan.
bernie_senders
i think posting tatum up more would be a good call. when he attacks the rim from the post it seems like he always gets a layup or free throws.
NotFlipkid
Everyone was complaining with Tatum taking long mid range jumpers years ago
Willis050
We need to talk more about how the hell we allowed Jimmy to always get to the lower right block endlessly
SRoku
he needs to post up more imo. he has the skill set to be a real problem for teams from the block, especially with his improved passing the past couple years. and him and JB both need to take more middies coming off screens. i feel like it would go a long way towards removing our zone problems.

This chart is dope.
