### [Source Article by The Athletic’s Anthony Slater – “Kuminga rumors, trade talk and draft possibilities: What’s swirling around Warriors as draft night nears?”](https://theathletic.com/4618058/2023/06/21/golden-state-warriors-nba-draft-free-agency-trades/)
### No to Cost-saving Trades. Yes to Competitive-purposes Trades
> Despite their tax bill rising into a previous untouchable territory and the new second apron looming as a major problem during the 2024 offseason, **sources continue to indicate that they won’t make pure salary slashing deals this summer and there will be competitive purpose to their moves**.
> That would rule out a giveaway of the 19th pick just to avoid the guaranteed salary. The **19th pick is estimated to make $2.75 million in his first season and $2.9 million in his second season**. That’s larger than the veteran minimum (attached to exponential tax penalties) but isn’t enough of a difference to avoid the salary entirely. But if they do trade down for an extra asset or out of the draft for a veteran or a future draft pick, remember that aspect.
### No Kuminga Shopping (Contrary to the [ESPN Report](https://www.espn.com/nba/insider/insider/story/_/id/37838983/2023-nba-mock-draft-why-scoot-henderson-play-no-2)). Doesn’t mean Warriors aren’t Listening:
*Prob means the ESPN report likely stemmed from other FOs talking from their talks with the Warriors FO*
> There have been various **trade ideas floating around the Warriors’ front office the past few weeks. Their phone lines have been open. That increased aggressiveness surveying the landscape** has been a talking point across the league. One of the exploratory conversations that surfaced, via ESPN, was a trade up scenario involving Jonathan Kuminga. From my understanding, that was an inbound call from a team in the lottery that has registered regular interest in Kuminga dating back a year. **Multiple team sources have been adamant that the Warriors aren’t shopping Kuminga around.**
### Having the 19th Pick made it hard for the Warriors to get Lottery-level/Almost Lottery-level Talent to Work Out (ex Dereck Lively II):
> They scheduled a workout with Dereck Lively II, for example, but he backed out of it the day before. Lively is a raw center with some elite measurables, theoretical defensive tools and a long way to go offensively. He’s 19 and just finished his freshman season at Duke. But will he fall to 19? Lively’s representatives clearly don’t believe so. That appears to be why they canceled the workout in San Francisco. Which is a problem the Warriors have encountered this draft cycle. In 2021, the year that they had the seventh and 14th picks, it was easy for them to get almost any lottery prospect in the building. This time around, sitting at 19, it’s difficult for them to get many prospects projected in the mid-teens because agents don’t even want the perception out there that their guy could fall to 19.
>
> The Warriors do have plenty of prospects they’re looking at with the 19th pick. Most of the players they brought into the facility projected in that range are on the older (readier) side. That includes **Kris Murray, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Trayce Jackson-Davis and Brandin Podziemski. All four are multi-year college players already in their 20s**.

torronto, pacers or mavs called about kuminga
Of course we always want our team to win, but now I want them to win at least one more with this group as a fuck you to the CBA and to CJ in particular
Seems like we’ll being going all-in for this one last season before Lacob considers cutting costs
This is good news honestly.
I think there’s a pretty decent chance Kuminga will be traded. Moreso than Poole or Moody.
Right now, the lineups don’t make sense with Kuminga. Like the article states, the poor guy is basically at the end of the roster at the 3/4 position. Can’t be on the floor with Dray or Loon. He’s a decent defender but has no perimeter threat like Moody. He just doesn’t make sense on the roster.
You could argue that Poole and Moody have positional need for the Warriors, but unfortunately Kuminga could be the odd man out despite clearly having the most potential out of those three.
I like hearing we’re not shopping Kuminga. Only because all the deals are to basically undervalue JK or to swap him for a similar player with little upside. Nothing has made sense basketball wise
Foolish to sell low on the kids when the vets can’t play full seasons any longer.
At worst you make a trade at the deadline when you have a big expiring contract.
Just trade Poole and the pick for a serviceable player that’s IQ is better than a goldfish.
I too would not be shopping kuminga
I think that the economics have changed in the past 2 years as well. Bob and Joe started first mentioning $400M 2 years ago as a limit, and it really gained traction a year ago when they extended Wiggs and JP. But now with inflation and just…time…$400 M is no longer a crazy number.
I feel like all the Kuminga trade noise is from his camp and opposing teams.
