“The belief among several NBA executives who spoke to HoopsHype is that Nikola Vucevic, one of the top free agents on the market, will re-sign with the Chicago Bulls. The estimated value of Vucevic’s free agency contract, according to these executives, is three years in the range of $65 million.”
This deal would place Nikola among the highly-paid centers in the NBA, a position that has had to endure tremendous growth in the face of an increasingly three-point-oriented league.
All signs now point to the Chicago Bulls retaining Nikola Vucevic with a significant multi-year contract extension in free agency. Currently, Zach LaVine is the only Bulls’ roster member signed at least until the 2025-26 season, but this agreement would add Vucevic to the club. By the time the team’s contract expires, Vucevic would be just a few months away from turning 36.
And that’s where the problem many fans see in signing a long-term contract with the center lies. As good as he was for the Bulls last season, we may never see a consistent performance like that from him again. Even with a relatively healthy team last season, the Bulls had an unsatisfactory performance due to poor roster construction. However, the fact that Vucevic is arguably the best free-agent center on the market means that the Bulls could lose out if they let him walk for free.
Earlier this month, rumors surfaced that Vucevic was close to signing a multi-year extension with the Chicago Bulls. He addressed those rumors directly, bringing relief to all those who were eager to see the red and white big man in action next season.
“It’s good to know that the front office trusts you and believes in you,” said Vucevic. “We’ll see what happens when it’s time to discuss a new contract. I feel good here. I’m in a good place.”
