KPJ part 2 or next KD? Place your bets now.

  2. PatientWriting

Talent and potential is still there IMO. Really hope he can put it together, this could be a MASSIVE steal

  3. tohearnnr

If someone 2 years ago said the Cavs were drafting Emoni Bates, we would have thought we were drafting early and not coming off a playoff exit.

  4. DeceptionZA

Worth a shot at 49 if he doesn’t work out oh well

  5. If he won’t play defense, JB won’t even play him. He’ll be down the road playing at CSU

  6. PtP_Pluto

I honestly think he is complete garbage but who cares at this point. The 49th pick amounting to anything is slim to none.

  7. I would be thrilled if this was 2020, dude has the skill but he is in no way an nba level talent. Really hope I’m wrong though and he can be a spark plug off the bench

  8. Karl151

W pick. All the other guys I had ahead of him were gone. Take a flier on this young guy and hopefully he amounts to half of the potential he had back in high school. If not no biggie, it’s not like 49 pick means anything in the grand scheme of things.

  9. Taste_The_Soup

I waited 4.5 hours for this? Fuck Koby. You didn’t learn from KPJ?

  10. Redzone676

At least summer league will be entertaining

  11. brady11

Idk I’m fine with it. If he is actually shit like he was in college, then it’s just a waste of a second rounder. Not the absolute end of the world. Or he finds any amount of his potential and could be ok

  12. prozacprodigy

These are the kind of picks you make in the back half of the second. If it doesn’t work oh well

  13. TheSmokedSalmon420

Yeah don’t love it but I mean it’s pick 49 – if we get even an average bench guy that’s a success

  14. 14 hours ago, in the ‘Bates meeting with Cavs’ thread i said this.

    > lol. i’ve been as critical of Koby as anyone on the board… but even he isn’t this dumb.

    I stand corrected.

  15. Alive-Ad-4164

Imagine if he lives up to his hype

  16. PositronicBrain47

I am fine with the pick. Trading up would have been ideal, but the Cavs need wing scoring and shooting so why not take a big swing at this point in the draft. There were some positive reports about his attitude and work at the combine and if he can buy into the team culture the Cavs have a chance at getting a needed wing.

  17. MenaceThunderous

That’s about the only name they could take at pick 49 that I could possibly give a shit about so I’ll take it. He’s still a teenager and is an actual wing that shoots lol

  18. ja21121

Maybe they’re thinkin Don is a pretty good leader, let’s take a shot he can turn this kid into an nba player 🤷‍♂️ If im taking a wild shot, I wouldve rather taken a shot on some athletic freak instead of a guy like bates but whatever. Maybe he will figure it out

  19. moneyinthebank216

This will either work of be a complete disaster there’s no in between

  20. NetCollectors

I understand why fans don’t like it but I’m happy with it

  21. KosherPope

We all knows he’s a long shot but he fits JB’s run and gun scheme

  22. Evwithsea

Hell yes. Best value on the board. If he can get his head on his shoulders and play in a system we have ourselves major value.

  23. jabbamarcusrussell

Love it. I absolutely hate him as a prospect but at this spot with the needs we have why not

  24. NicoAbove

Altman is such a suspect draft guy. I know you can’t really get anyone good with pick 49 but don’t pick the guy who did everything to mess his career up.

  25. iAgree_gocavs

This is a big swing, could end up being good if he can buy into a role and play team ball. I doubt it will work out but it’s the 49th pick so who cares

  26. bigeyedtitmonster

Eastern Michigan student here, Emoni is a good kid who had the weight of the world put on his shoulders when he was a preteen. He had a shitty father make a fake prep school to get him to college early and up his hype. 2022/23 EMU basketball was absolute dog shit and would’ve lost every game without Emoni. He’s not the ballhog chucker that Twitter would make you believe, he facilitated quite a bit, but the rest of his team was so trash you’d never know. Please just watch EMU vs UofM to see the kind of player Emoni can be. I really hope this kid makes it, can’t be easy to be on the cover of sports illustrated at 14 and be expected to live up to the hype.

Great fuckin pick at 49 and its at a position we need to…if he can turn into the scorer ppl thought he could be this will go down as a great fuckin steal in the draft

  28. I expect nothing from him but I also think he’s our most talented player at the wing position on the team already. Whether he can be a pro and put on some weight remains to be seen.

  29. melodicprophet

All of my faves were gone. Tshiebwe would be cool as an undrafted FA.

I really didn’t think the Cavs would take him. But now that they did, I’m fine with it. It’s the 49th pick. We need a wing. We need more young talent.

Character concerns abound, bad tape, etc. But he’s 19. This is definitely a 3yr project make no mistake. Has to add weight and just develop his fundamentals. If he commits, the Cavs could be a great organization for him to just settle in and get to work without too much heat on him.

About as intriguing as it gets this late in the draft. Will be interesting.

I just read ESPNs lengthy scouting profile on the kid, dating back to him at 13 years old. It’s safe to say, I expect very little from this kid. He seems immature and hasn’t worked on his game at all. Twice as many turnovers as assists? Sheesh. Poor shot selection, with decent at-best true shooting percentage. Plays losing basketball according to the scout. He peaked at 13, it seems.

Edit: also not physically gifted in wingspan, or hand size, not athletic (even called slow and compared to Huerter), doesn’t play defense, like at all. It’s amazing this kid still got drafted.

  31. melodicprophet

Emoni will benefit a lot from getting run in the H League.

  32. I don’t hate this. Its really a test, might work out well for the Cavs.

  33. No-Boot-5286

I can’t see him ever being any more than spark plug at best considering how bad he is on defense.

  34. doncastiglionejr

This dude is gonna suck…the only reason he got drafted is off his high school pedigree…but when you goto Eastern Michigan and don’t make waves, we basically are getting another Jordan Clarkson

  35. ramentotendies

Guy may not be lifting weights yet much and doing the work needed to get more explosive. I saw him play freshman year high school and man his body and height don’t look much different. His shooting stroke and handle for size are nba talent

  36. steamofcleveland

This is the exact type of pick I was looking for, low risk high reward. I don’t expect him to play every night and I wouldn’t be surprised if he spends a good portion of his year on the Charge, but I hope to see him actually play some stretches on the Cavs. Summer league should be fun.
