[Grange] …with news earlier this week that the Raptors are likely going to reach an agreement on a contract extension with Gary Trent Jr., it becomes easier to project that Toronto will indeed return with most the key pieces of the roster they finished last season with intact.

Grange saying “Most of the key pieces of the roster” is interesting.

So the FO is basically saying Nick Nurse was the problem

Masai really gonna blame last season all on Nurse

At least they’ll have a movement play style. More normal defence. One more shooter. Year 3 Scottie. A full season of Poeltl(probably). Potentially get more out of players like Achuiwa, Flynn, and Trent.

Even if they mostly run it back, it’ll be different from last year.

Double decker bus that is running over Nurse right now

I mean trading poeltl for next years draft we’ve gotta cope some how lol. Might as well run it back and hope we’re good enough to give them a late 15-20th pick. Highly doubt we’re winning a lot this year if we actually bring back the exact same squad without trading for more depth.

  7. I do think running it back is not the worst answer if you can get a couple things right

    * Less ISO ball from Fred/Pascal
    * More success pick and rolls with Poetl
    * Shooters not shooting 30%
    * Porter Jr and Dick providing some depth
    * Scottie taking another step forward

I know a lot of things need to go right but they can be a 6th seed if they get everything going properly.

Blowing it up doesn’t work this year when you don’t have your first round pick next year

Honestly not mad. That’s a very good 10-man rotation:

    FVV/OG/Scottie/Siakam/Jak

    GTJ/Dick/Otto/Achiuwa/Boucher

Even if we don’t make it far in the playoffs we have plenty of young guys being developed and learning in a competitive environment. Sure we could trade Siakam for assets but if he wants to be a raptors-lifer then honestly why not, how often do stars want that? As for FVV, a lot of people here seriously underestimate how important he is to the team right now, there’s more to basketball than shooting. If some team offers an overpay in a S&T then we should definitely consider moving on from Fred but otherwise he’s still a very good player and great vet to have around.

Honestly, might as well bringing back Fred and running it back IF Portland was too stingy to give up the 3rd pick for Pascal. We have an all star/all NBA type of player that wants to be in a Raptors jersey, I’m not trading him for scraps.

Seeing how much Bradley Beal – a worse player on a supermax deal with a NTC was able to net the Wizards (5 2nds, 4 swaps late into the decade), I’m actually pretty confident giving Pascal the max and still get assets back in a trade should we need to trade him down the line.

This team on paper should be better than the 2022 team that won 48 games, and could definitely be a top 5-6 seed in the East next year if they gel under the new coach. We were a 0.500 team with Fred shooting 32% for half of the year, I’m not asking Fred to play like an all star but if he just shoots 36% for the season we probably have a couple of those losses turned our way. He played pretty well since Jak joined the team.

Pascal has improved every single year, and there’s no reason why he can’t play at the same level that he did last season.

Scottie/GTJ/OG are still young and could add to their game.

Jakob is the best big we’ve had since Serge & Marc, and all things aside have played extremely well since getting traded here last year. His FT shooting leaves much to be desired and while I don’t expect that to improve much at this point in his career, I think having a full training camp is going to help him a lot in terms of gelling with the team.

Dick obviously will provide a lot of spacing and we’ll see whether he or GTJ comes off of the bench next year. I’m expecting him to be a key piece off the bench and actually have plays ran for him.

So Masai pretty much lied in his end of season presser saying that changes will be made on all fronts with the team.

The roster had it’s issues but it makes sense to hold onto it with the new coach. WHy blow up a team that 2 years ago was a 5th seed before you see what a new coach can do with it.

  13. karlou1984

Just ban all screaming children at home games and this team will be legit

  14. Wow we truly just scapegoated Nurse entirely and are running back the same roster. I’ll try to be optimistic, but Nurse is the last guy you can blame here – after that the front office takes all the blame. We’ll see what happens.

  15. AngryHelicopter

By retaining everybody, they at least retain the option to blow it all up later and actually get something for them. Since they weren’t able to get anything done at the draft, as per usual, the dream *now* is they re-sign Fred, re-sign Jak, extend Siakam, then trade Fred and Siakam at the deadline. (I don’t think it’s likely, but that’s the dream.)

  16. sametrical

Maybe not the most popular opinion, but I’m kind of excited to see what this roster can do under a new coach. Of course my expectations are tempered, and I’m not expecting them to contend, but I think they can play .550 basketball, and I’ll enjoy watching it. I’d rather a few season of meh over a really awful season in the basement. I’ve watched too many of those since 95

  17. Agreed_fact

The worst reality is so close I can feel it. Run it back with the same squad + Dick, and no Fred cause Orlando gives him a 100/3 contract.
