[Kawakami] Source: During the draft, teams in the 30s were calling Trayce Jackson-Davis’ agent asking if he’d take a 2-way deal if picked. Agent declined, saying they wanted a roster spot & guaranteed $–knowing GSWs were aiming to get into 2nd round and would offer a multiyear deal.

TJD’s agent is Dunleavy’s brother.
Warriors got a steal.. i guess essentially a late first round pick with TJD.
This bit from Slater in the Athletic expands on this and was super fascinating insight/explains how and why he dropped so far out of nowhere. This kind of inside baseball is so fascinating to me.
“They linked up with the Wizards again, agreed to add Patrick Baldwin Jr. into their outgoing package and in a roundabout way acquired that 57th pick for cash considerations. Then they used it to grab Jackson-Davis, a prospect they coveted, behind-the-scenes manipulating him deeper into the second round and into their grasp, in part, because Dunleavy has a strong relationship with Jackson-Davis’ agent – James Dunleavy, Mike’s brother.”
Also lol at Slater describing Mike having a “strong relationship” with…his brother. Such a diplomatic description
In a two man draft, the Warriors got the 3rd pick and used it on a 6’9 forward from Duke…
Years of brutally horrible basketball ensued until that 6’9 forward was used to acquire the heart and soul of the WE BELIEVE team and did what PJ Carlesimo could never do and that’s break the Sprewell esque chokehold Chris Cohan and Bobby Rowell had on this franchise…

The 6’9 prodigal son returned covered in the ashes of a 20yr dumpster fire and turned that coal into CP3…
[and then the draft happened…](https://youtu.be/wV9jXiyZzH0)
2.5 -D Checkers… well played lol.
I’m pretty psyched about this guy.
I’d say MDJ used his connections and drafted potentially a great player.
NYT has a nice article on why the second round pick system is getting ruined in the NBA. Players getting stashed and getting no play time.
But why wouldn’t teams just sign him to a regular contract instead of a 2-way?
