Demarcus Cousins had a fair and astute point. Historically speaking, when you get to 3 MVPs that puts you in a rare club. Only Bird has won 3 straight MVPs (since the media started voting) and he at that time was considered the best player in the world. He also won a his 2nd and 3rd championships during that stretch.
It would’ve been hard to justify Jokic getting a 3rd MVP and having been outed in the 2nd and 1st rds the 2 years prior (even though the Nuggets had injuries).
The notion that it’s a regular szn award is true, but it is built off of narrative and the media has always looked at previous year playoff performances as well (which is why no one even thought about Giannis winning MVP in 2021 even though he had great numbers that were comparable to Jokic
I don't get how people are so delusional to say he "only" has good advanced stats, when even looking at the 3 basic stats (pts, rb, ast) he is a top 3 in the league in rebounds and assist. But once you do look at efficiencies and advance stats he obliterates anyone you compare him to, especially when you consider that his usage percentage is way lower than the other top candidate. Meanwhile Embiid's case has always only been about points and nothing else.
We need to stop saying that "people" think he chases stats, when literally the only person who said that was Perkins, and he only said it because it is so outlandish and knew it would stir things up. Everyone who knows Jokic will tell you he is likely the person who cares the least about stats so Perkins just said the most ridiculous thing just to get people talking, it would be like saying Lebron isn't athletic enough or Curry isn't a good shooter.
