Nets Draft Grade : Noah Clowney and Dariq Whitehead grades, plus Sean Marks execution on Draft night

After the glow of the Draft has worn off, Doug and Adam grade out the Draft on a few levels for Brooklyn. The additions of two young players in Noah Clowney and Dariq Whitehead have all the positivity of a franchise needing an infusion of youth.
The picks on their own receive positive grades, though both Adam and Doug do question if other teams had these prospects as high on their boards.
Beyond Clowney and Whitehead, there is the perception of what Sean Marks wanted to accomplish entering Thursday nights Draft. Dorian Finney-Smith and Royce O’Neale remain on the Nets and Doug reiterates his belief that the value once perceived at last years trade deadline is long gone.
Much of the sentiment follows a similar pattern when Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving were traded, a feeling of serving to tracks of organizational philosophy – and maybe not fully satisfying either…

  1. Looking after the draft Brooklyn has some good rookies who have the skills and with more time and development can really shine in Brooklyn in the future.

Now looking at our current roster we have a clear divide of vets and younger talent. Ultimately Brooklyn needs to agree on a solid direction after free agency next week whether that is free agent upgrades or a possible trade or two.

But Brooklyn does have a good defensive core. They just need to balance the scoring and rebounding out more and this team could be really competitive this upcoming season….

  2. Will say though that Cam Thomas Dayron sharpe Noah Clowney and Deriq Whitehead will all not get the same amount of minutes and Brooklyn has options to consider especially with Thomas future in Brooklyn. Looking at the trade market if a team wants Thomas or Sharpe as part of a trade deal Brooklyn has backup options in Whitehead and Clowney. Marks did a good job of infusing more youth while also setting up potential future moves…

  3. It's extremely difficult to grade Sean Marks' execution on draft night when we don't know either side of the negotiations, assuming there were any

  4. Also its great Dorian Finney Smith and Royce o Neale didn't get traded just to move up a draft slot. That would have been a waste of valuable assets. Plus most of the draft picks were wing players. Brooklyn has a surplus of that already.

Plus if Brooklyn wants to return to contention Doe or Royce would be important factors to that. Also if Brooklyn wants to pull a trade off next week during free agency they have more assets to make something work and upgrade.

Claude was right for Brooklyn to be patient at least during the draft because besides Victor Scoot Miller or the Thompson Twins no other draft pick was worth trading significant assets away to move up.

Now Brooklyn can go into free agency with all their assets and ready to make some good additions….

  5. Orlando Magic is a team Brooklyn should look at as a possible trade partner. They have a surplus of guards and Cole Anthony is available for trade. Brooklyn could let go of some expiring vet contracts and trade for Cole Anthony and backup center Wendell Carter Jr. in a deal.

Brooklyn acquiring two young skilled players and adding them to Brooklyn new core would be a positive outcome that allows Brooklyn to build more towards their future….

  6. Right now I’m not too excited about the draft picks….Doug used the term “speculative “ which is where I’m at. Clowney is a developmental project…probably wont know about him for awhile. Whitehead is totally dependent on health and we might have an idea on him within the next 6 months. That said, Sean Marks had his reasons for what he did and I have to defer a little to that.

  7. Ben Simmons looks like he is in pretty good shape?? If he comes back with 7 or 8 cylinders firing things could be interesting. That is purely speculative as well.

  8. The front office and the coaching staff are aligned on the culture of the Nets. Marks and JV had nothing but praise for the newest Nets. For now, I think we going to focus more on development than adding major players to the roster. It remain to be seen how the new draftees perform, but since we're not championship contenders, we're going to commit to developing our young players.

  9. For me this is a good draft IF their positional expectations are correct.

If they just see Clowney as a back up center and eventual replacement for Claxton, then I hate the selection. BUT if they see him as a potential stretch 4 that can play next to Claxton, then I’m all for it.

If they see whitehead as just another three and d wing then I don’t like it but if they see him as actually a combo guard that can have playmaking ability at an all star level then I love it.

So for me, it’s all about what the organization sees in these players, and how they develop them. Like I hate how they developed Claxton, because Claxton at Georgia was a playmaking big but in the NBA they turned him into some rim running guy when he could’ve been more.

  10. Since we drafted players that needs development, that means rebuild, so why didn’t we trade Bridges for Scoot? We do need a point guard. Or we can trade for Obi Toppin, Quickly & Sims.

  11. The difficult thing is at that around the point the nets drafted – teams have a guy they are willing to wait for. Cap space teams like Utah, OKC, – did not have guys they were willing to trade up for to take up cap space.

Utah was looking at using cap space for KP. Houston looking at Al the vets. These trades take 2 teams.

This draft seemed like a bunch of teams playing chicken with each other and their own players. No one really blinked

  12. I dont expect alot out the gate but I do think both players willingness to play defense and whiteheads 3 point shot are going to get them a spot in the rotation. I preferred leonard miller over clowney tho but I like the whitehead pick but it depends on medicals

  13. Dang y’all we gotta be more optimistic as a fan base😭. The nets always drafted really well these last couple years! Wilson I’m a big fan of I think he can be a Shaun Livingston type, Dariq I think will be a big hit and clowney I like his tape more and more especially with him not being as known. I’d say we had a B draft 👏🏾
