Based on NBA mock drafts across the Internet, it was not a surprise that New Orleans picked Hawkins. The 6-foot-5, 190-pound guard was projected to be a mid-first round selection and appeared to fit the Pelicans’ needs extremely well. As The Sporting News put it while correctly predicting that he would be the No. 14 pick, “When fully healthy, the Pelicans have a young roster that should contend for an NBA championship. One of their only needs would be more perimeter shooting around franchise cornerstone Zion Williamson – and Hawkins would be that guy. Simply put, Hawkins has a flamethrower.”
The 21-year-old’s college track record and reputation from the perimeter had many draft sites describing him as the top shooting prospect available in the 2023 class. As NBA Draft Room put it, “Hawkins is one of the better three-point shooters in this draft class and is the best movement shooter. He’s elite at coming off of screens, catching and firing lasers from deep. Trying to guard Hawkins looks like the most exhausting assignment any defender could be given. He’s constantly on the move and flies around screens, ready to get his shot off in a hurry.”
