Scouting Report for Lakers Draft Picks Jalen Hood-Schifino, Maxwell Lewis… Guest: Mike Garcia!

The Lakers added four players in last week’s NBA Draft: First round pick Jalen Hood-Schifino (G, Indiana), Maxwell Lewis (F, Pepperdine) in the second round, and two undrafted players signed to two-way contracts (D’Moi Hodge, G, Missouri and Colin Castleton, C, Florida). They also signed Florida F Alex Fudge to an Exhibit 10 deal.

Generally speaking, the the Lakers’ draft was well-received by those who grade this sort of thing, but who exactly did they get? What are the strengths and weaknesses?

We bring back Lakers draft expert Mike Garcia (@canyondriver) to take a deep dive into the newest members of the purple and gold.

It starts with Hood-Schifino. What are his most translatable NBA skills? Who are his comps? (Is it weird to watch his film and think of a right-handed D’Angelo Russell?) Can he defend at a high enough level to earn minutes as a rookie? What about concerns around his 3-point shooting and finishing ability? Mike breaks down all of Hood-Schifino’s strengths and weaknesses.

Meanwhile, Maxwell Lewis comes from Pepperdine with a lot of potential as a shooter, scorer and defender, but plenty of rough edges to iron out. What are the chances he can get that done? How long of a learning curve are the Lakers realistically looking at for a guy who has tools but needs some refining? Unlike Hood-Schifino, Lewis won’t be expected to contribute next year. And what about the two-way contracts, in Castleton and Hodge? The latter was a very accurate, high-volume shooter for the Tigers – and there’s always room for shooters in the NBA – but the former might have an easier path to some floor time should he pan out, given the current makeup of the roster.

And then there’s Fudge, a player Garcia hoped the Lakers might find a way to get. High energy, great athlete, real potential as a defender.

  1. When players are drafted to a good or playoff team, they will be role players at first. The top lottery teams are usually bad, so the players drafted will see a lot of playing time. Just because they're drafted high doesn't mean they will all be successful, and vice versa.

  2. A+ draft. Many people say its a bad draft for the lakers. Both players won't play 30-40 mins per game for 82 games tho. This is just an assurance for their future, the lakers can still have a win now team with 2 rookies in the roster. If you are looking for role players to bench warmers, those picks are A+, especially Maxwell Lewis.

  3. They still need a center starter or backup. The Lakers leaked they did in fact workout Whitmore. They said his attitude and effort was awful.

  4. That’s not the reason why castleton went undrafted.. he decided to take the austin reaves path to nba declining teams that wanted to draft him late 2nd.. think they also have the same agent..

  5. Dude on the bottom looks like George Santos. lol Anyway, do u all agree with Jalen's comp as Jamal Murray?

  6. Larry Nance Jr. and Kyle Kuzma were both considered mid-second rounders in mocks and the Lakers were roundly criticized by draft “experts” for way overreaching for them. Josh Hart was said to be too small, too slow, too old, and not skilled enough to be more than a fringe NBA rotation player. Same for Jordan Clarkson who shot 28% from three his senior year. THT was seen as an interesting physical specimen but overweight and without a clear plus NBA skill… well, can’t win ‘em all.

Lakers front office is good at this. I can’t say I’m super excited about JHS or Lewis but I am sure I will be proven wrong, the only question will be by how much.

  7. FINO WILL BE "EVERYTHING" DLO IS NOT_____MAX HAS THE SLOWEST FUCKY ASS SHOT AND
    AWKWARD COURT SENSE…

  8. Lakers scout /draft well…more than likely these and the.Others signed have potential and can develop of course given time and effort…..A-.no less than b+..draft ..( signings)…

  9. Peace – Great show – I am more excited for Maxwell Lewis [he will be a steal] but overall it was a good draft including the UDFA players. I trust the process and respect our scouting department.

  10. Be worth getting Mike back on after summer league and throughout the season to give us a run down on how these guys are progressing

  11. I really wish we would have kept Jay Huff. The center position in the unsigned agency is going to be a farce market. Gabriel is okay, but he is not going to change the landscape.
