Daniel Gafford is the guy who should replace Jonas

Been watching this guys highlights the last few days (although it hurts to see the Pels in there so many times lol), and the more I look into his stats the more I think this is the guy we trade for.

we all agree we need rim protection, this guy in 20 minutes! averages 1.3blks for his career and has a blk% (which is important when talking about if someone is a goof rim protector or not) of 6.4%, for context, in blks that puts him 16th out of every center in the NBA, higher than guys like jarrett allen and clint capela and for his block% that puts him at 10th above guys like Brook lopez.

The reason he is not more coveted is firstly he’s in washington, and he comes off the bench. He plays 20minutes on average now, but I could easily see him doing 30mins. This would mean we didn’t have to play larry as much, intern meaning he was still relatively fresh come playoffs.

Also the way he plays is such a fit with us, he’s incredibly athletic and runs the floor on offence constantly, which is how we want to play, quick and in transition. and can switch on defence.

And the the added plus is he’s only 24 and on a 12m per year for three years contract.

edit: I love JV, but for what he does he just doesn’t fit the team, and with one year left better to get something for him rather than lose him for nothing, and it would clear some cap room.

I think that would be a downgrade in offensive talent and rebounding.

We were a top 10 defense with Jonas starting 79 games last year. We struggled with offense.

I would try to find a player who can play the role Larry Nance played last year closing games, someone better than Nance that can protect the rim and rebound.

There aren’t many bigs available that would be worth trading JV for. If the Hawks are interested in trading either of their bigs I would do that though.

I can see Gafford as a target especially with Washington starting their rebuild. In a vacuum JV is the better player. As the OP said Gafford is more athletic and runs the floor really well. Offensively he will set hard Screens and rim run. We don’t need to run offense through him to have him be successful. In fact he is better when he is not asked to do too much.

Defensively Gafford is a better shot blocker and JV is a better rebounder. I think having a Gafford being more athletic and attempting to block shots is more valuable than JV’s rebounding. Gafford being more athletic an hedge and recover where JV cannot.

I think Gafford will still be a 25 min per night guy and Nance would still close games. If we could add a 3rd big who was also athletic we can do big by commitee. I also think Gafford’ age and smaller contract for multiple years will be valuable keeping salaries down.

I think Gafford is very realistic and another name might be Capella

I wonder if the knicks would be interested in a JV for Mitchell Robinson swap? I’d be up for capela, but he’s more expensive.

I think if gafford was better and starter quality then porzingis would have played as a pf like he did his whole career.

Gafford will not make us better imo
