Derrick White becomes Boston Celtics starting point guard. Can he handle the new role?

Derrick White’s breakout season is part of what made Marcus Smart expendable. Now that Smart has been traded, White is set to step into that starting point guard role. John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal and Tom Westerholm discuss White’s best year yet, the challenges of being the point guard, whether he can handle that job, and whether he’s ready to take on a bigger role and more minutes and responsibility than ever.

  1. Thank you for doing this podcast. It gives me something to look forward to every weekday and I love listening to what you have to say after a game or in the offseason. It also gives me more knowledge about basketball and the Celtics.

  2. DWhite is the best guard for the Cs. Very consistent last season and i think he'll be able to create and direct on the floor very well.

  3. without even finishing the show, the short answer is YES! 1000 times yes!

    1. did you see him make muscala and hauser look like all-star in that milwaukee game?
    2. white ran the show for Pop for 5 years. he's experienced as a starting pg.

  4. He’ll be fine. I do hope Brogdon gets his shoulder taken care of whatever that may entail. Still feel like he can be a huge asset despite his playoff injuries/struggles.

  5. Derrick white ran PG for pop so I think he will do exactly what he did for pop but for Joe mazzulla and even better with the celtics

  6. Derrick can totally handle the role! Remember the Valentine's Day game v the Bucks when 4 starters were absent? Derrick led the bench with 27 pts, 12 assists and forced the mighty Bucks into OT. Love him! (While still missing our junk yard dawg too).

  7. John I know you’re a smart man, but Whites intangibles will surpass that of Smart, Smart was a cancer and ineffective, turnovers, checking himself into games, bad shots, bad lobs, bad fouls, to be a DPOY, I didn’t see him take on the challenge against Harden, Trae, Murray, or Butler, I never really bought into his fake toughness or his offensive decision making

  8. I have never NOT ONCE seen White with the ball in his hand and thought "ooohh boooyyy here we gooooo White has the ball 🙄😑"

  9. Oh, wow. A video that doesn't come out in the AM?! Here I am watching a video of yours on my personal account, first, rather than watching it on my work youtube account, first. lol

  10. I hop the Smart critics hold White to the same standards.

He must score 15 points every single game

Not take a shot away from the J's

Get 10 assists minimum as they deem that's a given for any starting pg

Have next to perfect shooting percentages

    Never turn the ball over.

  11. As an undersized hustle oriented player my whole life seeing Derrick white crash for that board to give the C’s that game 7 chance made me fall in love with him as a player

  12. Man look wtf, I love Dwhite he be showing up for us randomly AF at the right moments… dude is solid but bruh we need a PG PG, not a he can do it type of dude… Fred.Van or another guy we can get to help us out asap a Mike Conley even tho he’s expensive but that’s what I mean a PG PG imo

  13. he candle that his good at passing the ball the ball is not stagnant when he is the point guard

  14. I could not disagree more with the direction that Brad Steven's is taking this team. Keeping Mazzulla and his "Only shoot 3's" offense was such a bad move (the roster is too streaky from 3 for that). Also, now that Smart's gone there's no toughness! No vocal leadership. There's big Al but thats it. Mazzulla is young and has no experience so he can't chew these guys out and provide firm leadership like Udoka was able to (which Tatum and Brown need because they are too soft when things get tough). There's no culture. No identity. They can be a good team but lets be real, this is faaaaaar from a championship level team.

  15. White was the best PG in SAS. When he was on the floor the offence start to take shape and sense insted of chaos without him. He'll be fine in main PG role, just need to allow him to play this role and not to dribble through the middle line, pass the ball to one of the J's and go to the corner and wait

  16. I am also a Smart guy, but this podcast definitely cleared up some anxiety on the ball handling end. It’s twofold. Everyone else needs to up their defensive intensity and also move the ball without leaving Smart to heave a shot or make a late shot clock pass. Having said that, I somewhat disagree with the notion White will need to “run” the offence. I think he’ll be the main ball handler but I think Brad is really pushing that point offence. To be honest the player that needs to improve the most, given the recent changes, is JT. He’s been criminal in holding the ball and stagnating the offence. He’s so much more efficient off the ball and on catch and drives or shoot.

However I agree with the calling players out aspect. I think Smart was head and shoulders above in that regard. I think this is where Tatum and Brown REALLY need to step up. They need to direct the floor and bench, they won’t be able to hide behind Marcus – particularly at press conferences.

  17. Dimelord aka RW Cs need to allow him to expand his game more let him play more freely and if he finally gets a midrange it’s over.

  18. Move the ball, facilitate the offense. You got 3 high end scorers on the floor at once now. He doesn't have to be the 3rd option or take over a game necessarily.
