If Barnes is staying, that means Monte is looking for the guys, especially Keegan, to make a big jump. It's not bad, but not great imo. There's no need to doubt Monte yet.

I don't doubt the Kings can still make the 3rd seed, but Harrison Barnes will choke away the playoffs just like he has done his whole career. Letting him walk would have been addition by subtraction
He's solid in the regular season, then he becomes the leagues premier choker when the pressure is on

I'm mixed on this.. If we can somehow find a way to Re-Sign Sabonis while adding a Kuzma level player and still Retain Barnes then I'm O.K with it.. However, if this means we'll essentially be rolling out the same team we had last year with a couple decent but very minor tweaks? I obviously won't like that nearly as much.

Great news. Barnes is a veteran and an NBA champion. Well deserved
The best ability is reliability and Barnes definitely qualifies. He's a steady veteran presence on a young team. He's position flexible, being able to play Power Forward and his more natural position of Small Forward, and he's a quality starter at both. He's the Kings most dependable scorer when they really need a basket because he's really the only King with low post skills. He defends well and can switch all 5 positions, though obviously you'd prefer him not to end up on the point guard or center. He gets his points despite rarely being the focus of the offense or having a play "called for him.' In this high powered offense that kind of player is critical. If the Kings sign Venzekov that will be a massive roster upgrade and give you a 3 Forward rotation of Barnes, Venzekov and Murray which would be super potent. For all these reasons, this deal also makes sense if the Kings have a trade in mind. He's a quality player you can trade for a quality player. For instance, if the Wizards did a sign and trade with Kuzma for Barnes, I think most Kings fans would be happy. With cap manipulation and salary loading, the Kings probably can still get another quality free agent and/or sign Sabonis long term. Barnes had a bad shooting series against the Warriors, it happens to a lot of really good players. One 7 game stretch does not define the value of a player, even an important 7 game stretch. Be happy Kings fans, Barnes is a deal at $18 mil!
