Dallas Mavericks NBA Draft Reactions: Savvy Trades for Dereck Lively, Olivier-Maxence Prosper & More

Dalton Trigg and Drew Johnson break down what the Dallas Mavericks accomplished in the NBA Draft on Thursday night. The Mavs traded the 10th pick and Dāvis Bertans to the OKC Thunder for the 12th pick in order to draft Dereck Lively II. Then, they used the TPE from that trade to get Richaun Holmes and the 24th pick from the Sacramento Kings to draft Olivier-Maxence Prosper. What moves could be on the horizon???

  1. I hope… I really hope we can somehow flip THJ+McGee for a quality PF Starter. Someone like Kuzma (in a S&T) would be perfect! Then we could also use the full MLE for another good wing like Grant Williams (if we want 3&D) or DiVincenzo (if we want another great shooter). Then all I want is a veteran PG backup for the vet Min (Ish Smith or Dragic would be perfect), as well as Powell on a low deal for Locker Room reasons and as a Mentor for Lively.

I am also pretty sure that Holmes will be the starter for us. He had a lot of personal problems the last years (false domestic abuse accusations, custody battle that he now won, bad sress in Sac that he is now suing for defamation…) and he also just didnt fit the new system of the Kings. But he is a really good P&R big and lob threat, like Powell. But he is also a better rebounder and rim protector then Powell, while also being switchablel. So he should fit really good next to Luka as well as in our overall system. And we need him at least this season, cause Lively is a good talent, but not ready to play a starting role right now. He is way to raw, and needs a lot… A LOT of developement. He sets horrible screens (lots of offensive fouls last year), bites on pump fakes (over 5 fouls per 40 minutes last season) and needs to ad muscle so he stands a chance against other starting centers… To throw him in as a starter early on would be a mistake. Let him get his reps in against opponents backups.

    Starters: Luka/Kyrie/Green/Kuzma/Holmes
    Bench: Hardy/Bullock/Grant/O-Max/Maxi/Lively
Backups vet Min PG/Powell/ 2 vet Min Wings (Holiday and Lawson?)

Btw… Dorian shot 39% on nearly 5 3PA in his last 2 college seasons… calling O-Max a better shooter at this time of their careers is just flat out wrong! Its a long long way for him to be even a decent 3P shooter. It would be a huge success if he could ever reach Dorians level from the last view seasons (not really counting this one, cause for me it was an outlyer) for us.

Btw… the reason why Hardy played so good at the end of the season was exactly that we didnt play him early on. We gave him the time to get ready, diidnt burn him early on and gave him the confidence that he could do what our coaches wanted from him. Just because a Rookie plays good at the end of his Rookie season does not mean he wouldve played good at the start of the season.

  2. EDIT: That trade at the end doesnt work… Unless we put Holmes in as well. Means THJ/Holmes/Green for Capela/Bogdanovic… And I am not sure I would do that after this draft… We need a SF/PF right now, not a Center Upgrade…

And to be fair… Young averages 9.3 Assits per game over his career with a 44% AST%… thats better then Luka. So not sure where you get that "He only shoots 3's and never passes) comes from… And after a view injuries, Capela also isnt the 24 years old Capela from his Houston days anymore… he lost a lot of bounce and quickness.

  3. I’m 8 minutes in and not enough has been said about the Holmes pickup- dude is getting rotational minutes at minimum next year and is a stud

  4. i like the mavs pickup last draft pick… lively is much bigger , much athletic, much skill than dwight powell..omax is very good also
