Nets Free Agency: Adding Dennis Smith Jr, trading Patty Mills and more

The Nets were moderately active in free agency, signing Cam Johnson to a 4-year contract while also trading away Joe Harris in a salary dump on the first day. But they made some other moves over the weekend with the news that they had traded Patty Mills to Houston in another move to shed salary.

They also signed free agent point guard Dennis Smith Jr. as well and he will have a chance at a backup role in Brooklyn. The Locked on Nets guys take a look at these moves and what they mean for the team while also speculating on other moves that could happen in the coming days.

  1. Good morning everyone we have a lot to talk about. First off Brian Windhurst confirmed that Brooklyn is very likely actively involved in the three team Damian Lillard trade to acquire scoring prodigy Tyler Herro 🔥….

However Brooklyn doesn't just want Tyler Herro and wants extra compensation which could be a draft pick or a player prospect such as Nikola Jovic. If you're the Brooklyn Nets trying to get extra assets on top of Tyler Herro and for agreeing to a trade that sends Dame to Miami that's not a bad strategic move on Brooklyn part….

  2. Looking at the other moves Brooklyn made they are prioritizing athletic skill and versatility in signing Dennis Smith Jr and Lonnie Walker lV 🔥….

Smith brings gritty defense and some playmaking while Walker is s fun bucket scorer and can knock some threes down…..

Brooklyn lost a lot of scoring options in Joe Harris yuta Watanabe Patty Mills and Seth Curry. However most of them were not solid defensively dealing with injuries and weren't key members off the bench.

Brooklyn adding younger team first athletic players is another great move 🔥….

  3. Again I hope people can see the positives to potentially acquiring Tyler Herro. Currently Brooklyn has a nice defensive core of Mikal Bridges Cam Johnson and Nic Claxton with some offensive upside. However Brooklyn is lacking that shot creator and Tyler Herro has shown his offensive ability and skills for scoring in the clutch. Plus Brooklyn being able to have Tyler Herro Mikal Bridges Cam Johnson and eventually Nic Claxton all under contract for multiple years will allow Brooklyn to build real continuity chemistry and cohesion 🔥…

  4. Now looking at other moves Cam Thomas unfortunately looks like a trade candidate at this point. Looking at the current roster as is Spencer dinwiddie Ben Simmons Dennis Smith Jr and now Lonnie Walker are ahead of Thomas on the depth chart.

Ultimately Thomas wants a bigger role on another team and Brooklyn could potentially trade him for a future top draft pick or use him in a possible bigger trade….

Edmond Sumner meanwhile looks like his option wont be picked up and Brooklyn could use that roster spot to sign a backup center whether that's Christian Wood or Mason Plumlee….

  5. Things to remember – Durant did not want Bruce brown. Have to look at a lot of those transactions in that view

  6. @Locked On Nets – Hey Doug and Adam what are you making out of the three team trade discussion right now? Tyler Herro continues to come up in Brooklyn's space and multiple source outlets see Brooklyn as the most logical third team. What do you think are possible pieces Brooklyn would offset and possibly want back with Tyler Herro (draft assets or prospects)????

  7. Didnt we kind of have a better version of Dennis Smith Jr.‘s his name was Bruce Brown and he can actually shoot three pointers. Remember him just won a championship and we decided to let him walk, because Kyrie said so, and gave the money to Patty Mills that guy.

  8. Based on the recent videos, I’ve watched from Doug and Adam from my assessment. This is what Doug really wants to say to Adam but won’t:

“ Adam, this team stinks and worse than stinking. They’re probably gonna be boring and irrelevant next season and lucky if they make the play in tournament. We are sitting here discussing Dennis Smith, Jr. this is what rock bottom looks like and this is what NBA Purgatory looks like.”

Adam then looks over at Doug and then just starts crying uncontrollably like all of us Diehard nets fans who are trying to build excitement around Lonnie Walker, Dennis Smith, Jr. signings. Haha pathetic.

  9. Guys, Cam contract is incentive based which could make it less and it could motivate him to reach the incentives

  10. Everyone seems to just push cam thomas aside like he isnt the youngest guy to ever get 40 in 4 straight games lol

  11. Doug and Adam great points today, don't forget how stellar Marks has been finding diamonds in the rough

  12. The acquisition of Dennis Smith Jr doesn’t get me excited for obvious reasons. The Lonnie Walker acquisition gets me more excited.

I want to say I appreciate the heck out of Joe Harris and Patty Mills. They are standout individuals who made great contributions to the team….but as we know, their time has come and gone.

A number of other teams have made significant moves in the past few days and improved their teams considerably. As of noon on July 3, the Nets have been relatively quiet and have only marginally improved the team imo. The draft picks this year could potentially pay dividends starting a year or two down the road.

  13. Has anyone looked at the summer league roster for the Nets? Their anti-size philosophy runs very very deep. Upon last checking Clowney at 6”10 is by far their tallest player on the team. They don’t have one true center on the team.

  14. Marks roster construction philosophy just doesn’t seem to make any sense coupled with JVs terrible rotations equals get ready for some stalled offense.

Basically, you already have three players that are difficult to play together Ben Simmons, DFS, and Claxton. None of them can shoot. DFS can shoot a little bit but he’s not consistent.

So then you add in guys like Lonnie walker who had his best shooting came last season but before that was not very good and Dennis Smith, Jr., who is a terrible shooter so now you have two more players that are going to be difficult to play together not to mention the size of issues.

So far, you don’t have one guy on this roster that can consistently get you an easy bucket, whether in the post or through shot creation.

What I see is a team that is still very very easy to defend basically take away the driving lanes for Dinwiddie and dare him to take step 3s and bottle up bridges as best you can and the rest of the team will fall apart. The offense will still be whatever Dinwiddie and Bridges can muster.
