When it’s all said and done Reaves may end up my favourite Laker of all time. Of course that sounds kinda crazy, but hear me out.
Within the first 5 minutes of watching him play in his first preseason game with the team, I said right then and there that he had genuine star potential. Obviously you can’t predict that for sure so early, but I saw enough IQ, control, and skill to confidently say it at the time. Call it dumb luck, but I like to think I saw it.
Then, through the most miserable season in franchise history, he was always there making good plays with LeBron, and his unorthodox handle and playstyle made him a super fun guy to watch, especially cause he plays a lot like I do, and as another white guy with a short wingspan I related. Finally, he caps off the season with that monster triple double and game winners.
Then, in what seemed like another miserable season, he provides a glimmer of hope that I like to think sparked enough life in the team to go for the trades at the deadline, culminating in a ridiculous turnaround and one of the most memorable playoff runs in a long time.
He bleeds purple and gold, he’s about the team at all times, and he’s the absolute embodiment of an underdog story. Hope he retires a Laker after a long, successful career.
