In Episode 1430, Sean Woodley goes solo to break down the Toronto Raptors’ selection of Kansas guard/wing Gradey Dick with the 13th-overall pick in 2023 NBA Draft. Off the top, Sean digs into his intial to reaction to the pick. It was pretty unexpected to see Dick available at 13. And while Sean was definitely aboard the Kobe Bufkin train and was still disappointed to not see him be the pick, there is still a lot to like about what the 6’8 sharpshooter brings to a Toronto Raptors roster that’s badly needed a shooting injection for years. Next, Sean digs into why he’s excited about the fit between Dick and Scottie Barnes specifically, as they seem destined to make sweet sweet dribble-hand off music for years to come. Plus, Sean discusses why the Raptors not selecting a guard like Bufkin still leaves them in need of additional guard play on the roster. Lastly, Sean assesses what comes next for the Raptors as the draft came and went without a trade with the Portland Trail Blazers, who selected Scoot Henderson with the third-overall pick. Pascal Siakam remains a Raptor, and that’s a good thing. While running the whole thing back probably isn’t a dream outcome for this summer, it’s definitely the better route to go than simply offloading Siakam for a subpar return for the sake of doing so.

The so-called draft heads do not appreciate any of the nuances of the Raptors situation. They operate at 30,000 feet. While we all know the team needs shooting the difference in assessment between those who like this pick and those who don't is your view on whether getting a dynamic point guard of the future who can break his man down off the dribble and put pressure on the rim, thereby allowing us to move off of Fred Van Vleet, is a bigger priority than getting a pure shooter who can play the 2 or 3 with questionable defence. One can legitimately hold either view though I am squarely in the point guard should have been #1 priority camp

sure every NBA team wants shooting and are looking for more shooting. I didn't think our problem was with shooting but Jak does make spacing harder. however, our shooting tanked because we don't have creators making the right pass. Putting ball in Pascal/VV hands tanked our shooting. VV play making better after Jak but not sure why this FO likes vision 6'9 but extra short PGs like VV, Flynn and now MArquis

We will retain FVV now (sigh), and in the clutch moments, FVV & Dick are not going to be playable (together) on the defensive end, as Dick won’t get the opportunities to shoot on Offence. So I expect Dick to have low minutes & usage in closer games.
