Would’ve required Reaves to wait until the 5th-6th so that the Lakers matching at at the last moment wouldn’t tie the Spurs cap. He didn’t wait.
Zach said they thought about it and were going back and forth. Not that they were planning to.
That still shocks me. I think you’d need to have offered him at or near his max amount for 4 years which seems like a huge risk to make to our cap sheet before we’ve even see the team play with Wemby. We could have given him a flat year but year salary distribution for the record. We weren’t subject to the Arenas backloaded structure the Lakers would have been.
I do love Reaves. His shooting off ball movement passing and defensive limitations remind me a lot of a much less athletic but more confident Brent Barry. He can fit on any contending team’s lineup. Lakers fans think he’s Manu which is something.
For the kind of money we’d need to have offered him to make the Lakers balk? Which they still may not have at his max (despite the arenas structure to his annual salaries). I’m surprised if the Spurs were really considering putting an offer sheet in on him and taking ourselves out of the trade discussions we’re no doubt presently a part of around the league. It seems like it would have been a waste of time in all likelihood. The Lakers wouldn’t let one of their best players leave just over money and risk alienating LeBron after what they already did in the 2021 offseason. And best case scenario if he isn’t matched, he could be a prime Brent Barry level player and still be overpaid. And panning out as prime ~2002 Brent Barry feels optimistic anyways.
As much as every team is in competition with the 29 other teams, you also have to do business with them. Dont want to burn bridges. Lakers and Spurs have players represented by Klutch. Say we decide to draft Bronny next year and want to bring LeBron in. Just a theory.
Am I crazy or is Austin Reaves not worth a huge contract like that? I’d like to see it for more than half a season and I think LeBron’s teammates always outplay their capabilities outside of LeBron.

I imagine Wright and RC have to hold Pop back. The temptation to screw the Lakers is always strong for the man.
Eh, they have to perform due diligence on every opportunity, so calling his agent and discussing what a deal might look like (and putting that fear into the Lakers FO, lol) was kinda standard operating procedure.

I reaaaaally think we should have done this. Reaves is a good deal even on the higher number, and his fit with us is perfect. Plus, it’s absolutely deadly for a team in your conference like the Lakers to have such a valuable contract long term.
I know we didn’t have a lot of time to pull the trigger on that one but honestly it felt like a no-brainer. Win-win; if we get Reaves that’s amazing (we’re so under cap as it is) and if not we screw the Lakers.
It’s not exactly in the Spurs’ MO to make swings like this but sometimes I really wish they would.
