Latest Pascal Siakam trade rumours & why the Toronto Raptors should extend their best player

In Episode 1442, Sean Woodley goes solo to discuss the latest reporting on Toronto Raptors star forward Pascal Siakam and the rumours that he might be headed out of town some time this summer, with the Atlanta Hawks and Indiana Pacers both identified as potential suitors. Off the top, Sean digs into the latest from Marc Stein, and retraces the franchise’s steps that have led to what could be an embarassing, and potentially damning divorce with their best player and one of the best Toronto Raptors in history. How did we get here? Sean digs into why it would represent a pretty collossal failure on the part of the front office for all their minor moves and small mistakes of the last couple years to lead to a trade of their best overall player. Next, Sean digs into what could potentially be on offer from the Atlanta Hawks and Indiana Pacers. Some combo of De’Andre Hunter, AJ Griffin, Kobe Bufkin, Jalen Johnson, Onyeka Okongwu from the Atlanta Hawks could give the Raptors a nice youthful talent infusion, but will the Hawks be compelled to play ball? The Indiana Pacers can probably put one of Jarace Walker, Ben Mathurin or Andrew Nembhard on the table, but are any of those prospects tantalizing enough to make it worth moving off a guy who the Raptors could very easily just sign to an extension to keep him around long term? Lastly, Sean discusses why he’d absolutely be in favour of the Raptors extending Siakam, both because there is plenty of reason to think he’ll remain quite good through the life of his next deal, and because the Raptors might stand a chance of trading him for more down the line if in fact that’s the endgame here. Barring a great offer coming Toronto’s way this summer, hanging on to the very good basketball player is probably the best move.

  1. It’s happening Bogdanovic + Okongwu + Griffin for Siakim. Siakim resigns this summer with Hawks after the super max is gone.

  2. Please somebody save the Hawks from themselves. The Hawks have enough bricklayers.

  3. Oh man! These Pascal rumours are endless?! Poor guy. He represented the Raps with class and his name is out there everyday?! I am starting to believe he’s gone before this season. 😩

  4. The "offers" were bad and he walk for nothing….he turned down his extention, fired his rep and signed with klutch sports, ring a bell, ding ding
that's telling me he wants a major bag 🎒 and you'll lose him unless you trade him…clueless front office.

  5. Rumor started from a grange speculation. Totally bs story.. he didn't see siakam at Vegas which was also his dad's anniversary of his death… come on man..

  6. The offers for the players are “bad” because they didn’t sell high and waited until everyone is either on or about to be an expiring contract

  7. Keep Pascal. No one in the Raps line up can provide a consistent 20+ pts per game, 5 rebounds, 4 assists per game.. Only ppl wants Spicy P to be traded are the other teams who wants Raps to be weakend this season. Keep and sign Spicy P long term.. No brainer on this

  8. Siakam is gona get a season as a true number 1 out of Fred's shadow but if Kat is on the block I'm saving siakam for that trade

  9. The best version of this era of the Raptors was when Fred was injured 2 seasons ago before the playoffs. Everybody seems to have written that off. There is a new coach and a good defender in place of Fred.

  10. What if we get the 5th pick for 2024 what happens to the San Antonio top 6 protected pick? Will it be moved to 2025 or is it gone already? Trading Siakam is a horrible idea just extend him, Raptors got finessed.

  11. As a Hawks fan I don't think it's a bridge too far for AJ Griffin to go. He'd be missed because he's awesome, but between Bogi, Trae and Dejounte, AJ just doesn't get the minutes he deserves. Can't slide him to wing either because the Hawks probably want to start Saddiq anyway who brings shooting too. The Bufkin and AJ Griffin picks were more best player available picks than they were plugging roster holes imo so parting with both isn't a bridge too far. After that, the Raptors choose between a protected 2024 1st, and I believe 2029 and 2031 1sts. If those picks are unprotected then even if it doesn't help Scottie Barnes now, they're significant trade chips to go get young help elsewhere.

  12. do the trade with Pistons!!!! Must get Ausar here, Bojan and if we can get Duren as well is a good days work. If no Duren than just future FRPs lightly protected

  13. Sean, how do you feel about trading for Dame? If you like Pascal, at his age, you owe it to him to try and make a serious run. Portland will only make the trade if Scottie is included. I think Spicy, Poetl, Dame plus OG is a really good top 4.

  14. The NBA has taught me one thing over the last 15 years, you can't win the championship without a top 5 player, period. We gave Pascal runway and he exceeded every expectation, but he won't be a top 5 player so it's time to reset and hunt for a future superstar. Just the way it is, anything else is accepting mediocrity, which is not what sports is about.

  15. Great take. Seems like management has been flat footed and planned poorly. Maybe going to Africa and getting Orders of Canada should come second to actually making a functional roster for a pro team.

  16. Masai needs to extend Pascal. Ppl are offering 30 cents on the dollar for him right now without the extension. Extend him and then trade him once everyone signs their players and figure out if they are happy or not. Once people have those salaries on book and some are not happy with what they got then you have real trade options. Right now Atlanta not willing to offer even 1 of Griffin, Johnson or Bufkin let alone 2 and Indiana not willing to offer Walker or Matherin. These deals are none starters. If this is how it is we should just trade Pascal for only someone's unprotected 25, 27 and 29 picks. Maybe we send Pascal to OKC for their 25, 27 and 29 picks unprotected taking back Bertans and Oladipo as filler. Or we send him to Orlando for their 25, 27 and 29 unprotected picks for Issacs and Harris as filler.

  17. As a Portland fan…Anfernee Simons is still available. Work that or Tyler Herro into the Dame trade? IDK, ther's gotta some way this makes sense.

  18. Sean, what's more likely is we're a middling team that doesnt get out of the play in and we don't have a pick next year. You didn't want to trade Fred and that deadline and we lost him for nothing. Now you assume Pascal wants the extension? How about if he's banking on being an ALL NBA players this year and does and wants to hit Free agency? 1. It doesnt make sense to pay him ALL NBA money as he hasn't produced in the playoffs or play in since being "the guy". You want to wait for the 100% deal and that's what Masai tries to do. Sometimes it's not always there but you have to take the next step and not lean further into holding onto players and actually recoup assets for them. Especially for a player that doesn't shoot well from distance which in turn, will make his game age poorly when he loses a step and can't get as much separation from his defender. Players that can shoot, especially from distance tend to age better and have longer careers because they don't have to run in the paint as much to get their offence off.

  19. I dont appreciate the argument that pascal wants to be here and we gotta make it happen.

Sounds like a person settling for a romantic partner.

  20. This guys takes are gonna be even worse when Pascal is finally traded. The Scottie and O.G hate will become super toxic.

  21. Pacers would prob give up 2 picks, hield jalen smith, Ben Shepard and nwora. Raps need depth they fit with barnes r young. He’s a one year contract won’t guarantee to resign. As a pacers fan the best situation for the raps is to sign him to a max and trade him in the future.

  22. I think he needs to go for the future if our young stars. Will get a good haul, everyone underestimates his value. Masai only gets trades he wins on.

  23. As a fan i think it makes sense to find a way for him to stay. Also want og to stay. They need to figure it out.

  24. You’re totally missing the point dude. If pascal stays, OG must go. Og wants a bigger role. We need OG’s defence. You’re totally missing the point. One needs to go. Wake up dude. Pascal is gone

  25. It’s a salary cap league dude. You’re missing the point. OG value is so Damn high for us. We need him as a stopper. OG and Scottie are amazing friends. Scottie wont let Masai and Bobby trade OG

  26. I say keep Siakam. He's as close to a superstar as were are going to get and he really wants to be here, and he's relatively durable. Atlanta can keep Bufkin. Sure he's got some skills, but I watched him play and he's doing everything for which most fans have been vilifying FVV. He's an inefficient, selfish ball dominant ball hog trying to do too much, and probably pissing off his teammates–like FVV did. Both game commentators kept pointing it out–play after play. It angered me so much thinking that he might be involved in a trade for Siakam, that I just couldn't finish watching the last game. In fact, I wouldn't trade Pascal for any of their players (that includes Trey Young). You keep hearing how all these teams are chomping at the bit for, Siakam but their offers are frankly insulting. I really want to see how Pascal performs under this new coaching staff. I'm positive he's going to be even better this year–which is nothing new to him as he is constantly improving. I love Scottie, but what if he becomes another Karl Anthony Towns–someone who many predicted to be the second coming to Christ and has underwhelmed. We need this team to do everything possible to improve their shooting especially 3pt and FT. Bring in an elite shooting coach–I don't care. Get it done guys!!! Go Raps!!!

  27. The moment pascal is traded Masai's fate is sealed. He will be fired within the next two seasons. The reason being that whatever he gets in that deal will not make the difference. Right now it just looks the blunders are starting to multiply. Trading Pascal in this market is another blunder.
