On Ppovich and his approach to coaching and reprimanding his players, the Military approach to infraction is as such, you mess up you are "corrected"- instantly, consistently, without exception. Along with that there are two ways to reach people in reprimand (Honey vs Hammer), Honey = results are only achieved by being nice and cottling, aggression makes these people shut down, panic, and second guess their decisions. vs Hammer=be strict, every time. Holding accountability to instil the dicipline needed to acheive to goal. these are the ones that need to be pushed harder in order to succeed the goal and in some cases exceed what is expected. Pop being called old school, is way old school looks at todays generation as "baby soft". Think Tim Ducan and many others got Rings cause Pop was nice? Think Jordan was as great as he was cause of nice? old school was grittier by far, hungrier, and in some cases a much better product than what you see in todays games. Now you see opposing teams joking, taunting, and dancing, side changing all the time to play on super teams, shooting half court threes. Soft, fun, playful stuff compared to what would happen back then. But that soft playful stuff sells more and is reflected in todays game.
There is a reason why international players thrive under pop…that hard line old school approach is still the backbone of successful international teams. When internationals get to the nba thrive respond to that approach because they are used to it. U.S players are pampered and given excuses since grade school so if they experience a old school coach they rebel immediately. The unselfish spurs approach is also complimentary to the international basketballer mentality but contrary to the u.s basketballer mentality. Wemby is coming from Euroleague. Have you seen Euroleague coaches? Pop is mild compared to them, Wemby will be just fine with Pop's style of coaching. It's why every Euro player pop has coached has done well under him because they are already used to the coach coaching them hard.
