The more interesting thing about this as pointed out by Macri on twitter is that payne would slide into the exception created by trading Obi. And sending out Fournier would create a new larger exception that just so happens to be big enough to fit a contract such as OG anunoby’s

If people are wondering why the Knicks would do this, it’s certainly not for Cam Payne. It would be for the 19 million trade exception. Fournier has to be traded by the deadline or his 18 million contract will expire. This allows the Knicks to keep a 19 million exception to use in a trade up to a year in the future.
Aaaaaaandyy
Makes sense if we’re tying to package IQ with others and picks for someone else.

What I like is that this shows the FO is thinking of ways manage the cap and be in a position to improve when the right deal comes along.
I hope for Fournier’s sake that the FO can find a way to trade him while bringing back a trade exemption that can helps the Knicks down the road because Fournier has no chance at minutes in NYC even if he were to bounce back. The Knicks are just too deep at the 2/3.
