[Lewenberg] An up & down Summer League, but speaking to people in the Raps front office about Nowell, they haven’t been this excited about an undrafted player since VanVleet. Some obvious similarities (path to NBA/size) but like FVV at that stage, his feel for the game is well beyond his yrs

Very disappointed in the FO. Can someone explain how Nowell is supposed to play when teams realize he can’t score? Sharife Cooper held him to 2/13. Clog passing lanes and he’s useless
Can someone also answer what Nowell does better than Sharife? Sharife is younger, 6’1/6’ (much taller), and a much better scorer (made all G league 2nd team with 23/7 and 45/36/84 splits; 60 TS). Sharife is also better at getting to the rim and arguably might even be a better passer (or equal) literally had a better college season his freshman year compared to Nowell’s 5th. NBA teams just have to stop helping on Nowell and he’s useless
He can finish at the hoop better than Fred vanvleet and he’s 5’6
He’s got great vision and he’s only 5’5. Impressive.
Respectfully, he’s a long shot. I’m rooting for him, but also I’m not counting on him making the NBA.
He’s also an inferior shooter to FVV with significantly less height.
I’ll just say this about Nowell. There was zero chance he would see any time under Nick, but with Darko, anything is possible. If he doesn’t make the big squad, at the very least I’ll have reasons to watch the 905 moving forward.
He’s got a Chris Paul type of style, he’s such a good playmaker that even when his shots aren’t falling he’s impactful, he’s a surprisingly solid defender, and you can see that he’s got the ability to score over guys and create…it’s really f#$king impressive for a guy who’s like 5″8 in shoes!
If this kid was 4 inches taller he would have been drafted in the 1st round without question…he was excellent in college but because of his height, most scouts were scared away
We still need to see how he looks against NBA starters but so far it’s impressive!
Fred Van Petite
If he was 6’ or above he would’ve been a first rounder. The draft experts say his feel and pg skills are top of the draft
Mighty Mouse!
Biggest thing he needs to improve is his shooting. Just cant survive as an nba pg 6’1 or under if you cant shoot the 3 at a high level. He’s pretty streaky from deep
I think he just needs to work on keeping the turnovers down. His passes get easily intercepted when he tries to pass it over a taller player. Not sure if he did any floaters but it’s something that he needs to do more of to set up the lobs. He’s got the same problem as Fred with his shots getting blocked under the rim.
Nowell is fun to watch, but if the FO genuinely believe this and aren’t just hyping up the fans then they’ve lost the plot. He’s 23 and 5’7″. He was mediocre at best on one of the worst teams in summer league. Nothing about his game looks like it will translate against nba level defenses playing nba level talent.
I was pretty confident that the only reason they picked him up was to give some semblance of order to the summer league team. I really hope we don’t use actual roster space on him.
He still needs alot of work in the 905 if you saw all the games he played in but hopefully he pans out he has so many people rooting for him including myself
I just want him to get a shot. He doesn’t need a max contract or anything, but throw him in as an impact sub and see what he does
He absolutely needs to be an above average shooter to have any chance. His passes won’t mean shit if defenses don’t have to worry about his shot
Well beyond his years he’s turning 24 this year 💀
This guy makes FVV look like Penny Hardaway in terms of size.
He will be g league level at most.
I’m rooting for the kid. He’s fun to watch
He needs to be a great shooter and he needs a consistent floater. Without that even with him being a great play-maker his defensive liability will be to much to overcome.
