David Robinson was .006 pts per game behind Shaq and Shaq dropped 32 points and 22 rebs earlier in the day against the Nets. BTW Shaq was just in his 2nd season with Orlando when he was already trying to win a scoring title.

He shot 26/41, 18/25 from FT and the game was close until the 4th quarter where they got some separation. And they wanted to win that game, if I read this correctly, to retain 4th seed (if the 5th seed Jazz hadn’t lost their last game, which they did).
Way different than Booker’s 71 where he was getting fed shots in a blowout loss. Still impressive though.

It’s wild to me that the spurs of all franchises have been witness to two of probably the top 5 scoring displays in history. Both for the same reason. The iceman and the admiral both pulled off scoring titles in dramatic fashion.

I recently watched the 12 min YouTube clip on the game. Love the admiral. It’s so funny how god awful defense was back in this era. Defenders standing basically under the rim while dudes are taking wide open 8 footers. Crazy how much the game has evolved

Is this closest race for the scoring title in NBA history?
C4242
It’s funny, I don’t think anyone remembers him for winning the scoring title. I definitely remember him for getting 71 in a game though.
I really want to see a team try and get their guy a total like this. Closest we’ve come is Kobe’s final game.
These are the numbers that live on, quit benching these guys for the 4th quarter, I don’t care if it’s a blowout.

When you watch the Beef History video about DRob vs Shaq you’ll learn that it might’ve been a little extra personal for the Spurs because Shaq and his bullshit feud.

>What is it with all DR fans and David Robinson’s 71 point game against the Fuckin’ Clippers? The Clippers, led by John Noname, Brad Anonymous, Alvin Imnoone, Carl “silk panties” Bigloser and his sister Kadeesha. I think any one of us could have put up big numbers that night against what was truly a team ranked 5th in the state…………………..in HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL. Many players in this league could score 71 in one night if they were given the ball and forced to shoot from as far away as 2 feet against the Clippers. It only becomes marginally challenging if you put that tub-o-goo Stanley Roberts out there. Then you just have to take an extra few steps to get around him……………….or offer him a popsicle if he’ll kindly move. And believe me, Dave was going to the bench each time down to pick up a Bomb-Pop from the trainer. Please think about it, no one in the league wanted Shaq to win the scoring title, everyone on SA wanted Dave to score, everyone on the Clippers wanted him to score (added incentive — they figured that with 71 points against them, the Clippers might make it onto the Sportscenter highlights). MJ scored 60+ points against an elite Boston team that WAS TRYING. That’s substantial. 71 against a lackluster Clippers team with no center, no coach, no fans, no incentive and noplayers with ability above the CBA level is nothing more than a remake of the Grant Hill vs. Tommy So-n-so Sprite commercial. > >Is DR a great center? Hell yes. Is Hakeem a great center? Hell yes. But if you’re gonna use that 71 point game as a measuring stick as to who’s better, you might want to step back and look at who has two championship rings…………..and both guys had great teams around them. > >Mr. Peabody, PhD
I don’t know who need to read this old message board regarding this game, but you need this. And yes, that message board was around 1995 when he was still ringless. And yes, this ain’t no copypasta.

Even if every Spurs player had the goal of helping David Robinson beat Shaq for the NBA’s top scorer of the season title, you still had to be able to score those 71 points that day.
The pace of the games back then wasn’t the same, and the performance was truly special.
His stats: **71 pts (26/41 shooting, 1/2 3-pointers, 18/25 free-throws), 14 rebounds and 5 assists**.

how many did he need to win?/
Why do I feel like the Admrial will be lost to the history books? Maybe cause he was a great big man in thr big man era?
Legend. Also the last player to achieve a quadruple double.
Best way to describe Robinson was a more athletic, better shooting Dwight Howard.
