SACRAMENTO, Calif. —‌ The Sacramento Kings General Manager Monte McNair, the 2023 Executive of the Year, made sudden moves that made all the sense in the world during the 2023 NBA Draft on June 22.✍

More importantly, McNair and his staff pulled some levers of significance without being in the lottery, an area in the draft where the Kings have spent most of its off season in past years.

“Obviously, going into the night a little different than last year, which is a good thing,” McNair said. “But it’s the same thing that we are all willing to do, which is use the draft, free agency, and trades. Obviously this is one of those three to improve our team,” McNair said.

Off the bat, McNair traded little-used center Richuan Holmes and the Kings’ 24th pick to the Dallas Mavericks to clear cap space that would leave plenty room for the franchise to potentially land at least an A-list free agent over the summer.

Also, the Mavs received Oliver-Maxence Prosper with the Kings’ 24th selection in the draft. Holmes, who signed a four-year, $46,522,560 contract in 2021, has two more years left on the deal, according to spotrac.com. He was once a fan-favorite player until the Kings traded for center Domantas Sabonis in February 2022.✍

The wheeling and dealing was far from over. McNair and Co. then traded up with the Boston Celtics for Xavier’s Colby Jones with the 34th overall pick in exchange for the Kings’ No. 38 pick and a future second-round selection.✍

Jones, 21, led the Musketeers to an NIT title following the 2021-22 season. At 6-foot-6 and 210 pounds, he averaged 15.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.4 assists in 33.9 minutes per game during the 2022-2023 campaign before deciding to enter the NBA Draft after three seasons at Xavier.✍

NBADraftRoom.com’s thoughts on Colby Jones: “An athletic wing who is a great passer and defender with an emerging offensive game. Should be able to contribute early in his career.”

With the 54th pick, the Kings snatched 23-year-old Jalen Slawson out of Furman. At 6-7 and 215 pounds, Slawson led the Paladins to their first NCAA Tournament in 43 years. ✍

NBADraftRoom.com’s thoughts on Jalen Slawson: “A strong athlete who is versatile and plays a complete game.”

McNair maneuvered ways to clear salary-cap space and find wing players with two-way capabilities in addition to their experience on the college basketball floor. Jones played three years at Cincinnati’s Xavier University. Slawson loaded up on five years at the oldest private university in South Carolina.✍

McNair couldn’t elaborate on the elements of the trade but was willing to talk to members of the local media about players that are going to be a part of the franchise that broke a 16-year cold spell of not making the playoffs. ✍

  1. Man we passed on brice Sensabaugh. Another scorer who can get his own shot which is where we struggled at on the offensive end. He fell right to us
