This post is probably beating a dead bush, but I had this picture kept from a few months ago when I was talking with a friend.
In my mind, value over replacement player is the best way to measure a player’s performance in a game from a statistical lens.
For those unaware, [box plus-minus is ranked as the sixth-best advanced statistic, according to NBA executives.](https://hoopshype.com/lists/advanced-stats-nba-real-plus-minus-rapm-win-shares-analytics/) It is the only stat, compared to the ones above it, that can measure game-by-game performance.
>BPM is essentially the same statistic as VORP (Value Over Replacement Player) but the latter accounts for playing time.
I took all of their VORP from each of the four games and added it together to get this list.

Obviously, stats are not everything, but this was just something lying around on my hard drive that I thought would be interesting to share.

You’re right that this is probably beating a dead horse.
The Celtics made it a point to stop KD. They knew he would be unable to adequately play make for his teammates since that is his biggest offensive weakness. They made the gamble that if they sold out on him, they would be able to slow the Nets offense enough.
They also knew Kyrie could not adequately carry the offense 1 on 1 against their defenders for 4 wins. Great game plan by Udoka to target the weaknesses of the best offensive players on the team.
This kind of game plan ruined them against the Warriors and would not adequately work against great playmakers like Luka or Jokic. Each of these top players has strengths and weaknesses. It’s up to the coaches to find the way to target them. Sometimes the personnel are not there to take advantage. But the Celtics had all the right pieces to make KD’s life hell
Yeah the Celtics gameplan worked and obviously KDs numbers look bad considering he had to play big minutes for us to even have a chance. Still think it would’ve been a different series if we had won game 1, but discredit Nash for not knowing how to coach or adjust whatsoever. Series was much closer than the sweep suggested but it’s crystal clear that we just were not good enough. Way too thin and short across the roster against Boston (a common theme of the Sean Marks era).
I interpret that as they shutdown KD and there is a black hole behind Clax if I am understanding the measurement correctly.
Boston series would have been won had we traded for some wings at the deadline — Brad Stevens’ teams are now characterized for length, something we apparently don’t implement. Picking 5 rookies in the draft with all being unplayable also was not helpful.
That’s the hill i’m willing to die in. Forget all the off court problems and the Harden departure — that Nets team was still too much talented. We were just full of midgets.
