The Athletic Summer-League Review

“TORONTO RAPTORS

• Gradey Dick (F) — Dick played four games and averaged 28.2 minutes per contest. He put up 16 points, 2 treys, 6 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.5 steals. He’s one of the best shooters in the draft, so I’m not too concerned with the 29% shooting from downtown. If/when he plays with the Raptors starters, he will get cleaner looks. I was impressed with his movement. He doesn’t just stand around — he relocates, and even moves on defense too, while off the ball. Dick showed some dribbling ability, taking it to the rim and attacking closeouts. Had some mid-range jumpers as well. Flushed an alley oop in transition. Raise the roof, Toronto!!”

Gradey should not be conditioned to being a role player. The more MJ, Kobe, and Paul George tape he watches the better.

He really reminded me of the version of Duncan Robinson we saw in the playoffs this year. Great movement off ball, using his shooting gravity to create cutting lanes, some flashes of a lil off the dribble game. Solid finishing, soft touch on his floater, and a lil athleticism in transition. Active on defense though the speed and physicality of the game on that end will be a struggle while his body fills out.

I really liked what I saw. More than a shooter, a lot of great tools already, and room to grow in all the right areas. He’d have to really make leaps with his handle and shot creation to become a star but the kid is going to have a long career as a solid contributor on winning teams, I’m confident about that.

Anyone else go “How could they give him an F? He was solid in all his games, just obviously with a bit of nerves at first which improved as he…”

Until I realized that The Athletic hadn’t given him an ‘F’ rating and instead had listed Gradey Dick, a shooting guard, as a forward. And I think right there that tells us how much stock we should put in the Athletic’s rankings…

I won’t be too concerned about year 1 shooting. KD shot 28% from 3 in his first season.

he was stuck playing with guys only there to show themselves off, like imagine playing with 4 other guys playing like VanVleet in a contract year lol. He passed the eye test, and him and Nowell showed flashes of being a great duo.
