Hilariously Impressive Stats: Steph Curry Edition

This is the first of what I’m thinking of making a series of posts throughout the remainder of the off season where I do one for each player on the roster.

The below for Steph are mostly from this season, because it’s Steph and well, a line has to be drawn somewhere lol, but there are also a couple one offs from past seasons because why not (and by because why not I mean because they happened to catch the corner of my eye while I was looking at something else and they were too fun to leave off, ie there’s no rhyme or reason why they’re included and others are not). Also comes with the obvious caveat that this is just a very tiny fraction of wild Steph stats.

– Steph has the top 3 spots on the leaderboard of scoring (ie points and shots taken outside of the paint) seasons on an outside scoring points per game basis **since 1997** with his 2021 season holding the top spot during which he averaged 18.1 outside scoring ppg on 61.5 eFG%; his total outside scoring pts that season was 1,142 pts from 63 GP. The remainder of the top 10 outside scoring seasons since 1997 leaderboard is ([Source](https://automaticnba-stats-home-bvuzdx.streamlit.app) – navigate to Regular Season Shooting Stats from the sidebar menu):
– Steph (2019) – 17.8 ppg on 61.8 eFG% (1,229 total outside scoring pts; 69 games played)
– Steph (2016) – 17.3 ppg on 63.7 eFG% (1,367 total os pts; 79 GP)
– Kobe (2006) – 17.1 ppg on 45.9 eFG% (1,371 total os pts; 80 GP)
– Tracy McGrady (2004) – 16.3 ppg on 45.5 eFG% (1,091 total os pts; 67 GP)
– MJ (1997) – 16 ppg on 49.1 eFG% (1,311 total os scoring pts; 82 GP)
– Allan Houston (2003) – 15.8 ppg on 52.3 eFG% (1,296 total os pts; 82 GP)
– Steph (2013) – 15.7 ppg on 57.6 eFG% (1,222 total os pts; 78 GP)
– Ray Allen (2006) – 15.6 ppg on 54.9 eFG% (1,215 total os pts; 78 GP)
– Tracy McGrady (2003) – 15.6 ppg on 48.8 eFG% (1,173 total os pts; 75 GP)

– He shot 50% (5/10) on shots taken from 30-34 ft. in the playoffs this year. ([Source](https://go.nba.com/t2msj))

– Steph didn’t shoot below 43.8% (his 3P%) **from anywhere** within 30 ft of the basket. Why do I say within 30 ft? Well because it’s Steph and he’s a psycho that takes shots (63 of them this season to be exact šŸ˜) beyond there and so requires distinction lol. A detailed breakdown by shot distance (5 ft. increments, fyi, which is why the FG% for the first one listed is different from the FG% cited in the next bullet point below) because it’s just stupidly impressive ([Source](https://go.nba.com/rvnb4)):
– Less than 5 ft. – 69.9% (160/229)
– 5-9 ft. – 47.2% (51/108)
– 10-14 ft. – 54.5% (30/55)
– 15-19 ft. – 44% (33/75)
– 20-24 ft. – 48.4% (62/128)
– 25-29 ft. – 43.8% (208/475)
– 30-34 ft. – 26.9% (14/52)
– 35-39 ft. – 0% (0/1)
– 40+ ft. – 10% (1/10)

– He shot 76% on FGAs within 0-3 ft. of the basket this season, a **16%** improvement from the 21-22 season (59.9 FG%) ([Source](https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/curryst01.html)). Steph didn’t qualify for rate stats this season (just barely missed it), but if he had, he would have been 39th in the entire league, right behind Jakob Poetl, for FG% within 0-3 ft., all while finish through absurd amounts of contact because, as we all know, he’s relentlessly hacked and shoved off his spot (without a whistle) on his drives. The breakdown of player positions of the 38 players who had a higher FG% in this area? 19 centers, 14 forwards, 4 SGs, and 1 other PG. ([Source](https://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2023_shooting.html#shooting_stats::18))

– He shot 60% on corner 3s this year. Sadly, though, he had just 65 attempts from the corners all regular season. Broken down by sides, he shot 57.9% (22/38) from the left corner and lol 63% (17/27) from the right corner.

– Steph’s game high in points for each of the last 3 seasons (listed below) was higher than his game high points in 7 of his 11 seasons prior to those. Man is aging like fine wine.
– 22-23 (age 34 season): 50 pts
– 21-22 (age 33 season): 50 pts
– 20-21 (age 32 season): 62 pts

– Last but not least, a gem of a callback: Steph attempted *and made* 7 dunks in the 15-16 season šŸ˜ lol might actually be my favorite fun fact. Video playlist of them all [here](https://thehighlow.io/video/player/nba/2015-16/201939/make2p,make2pa?ordsq=asc&shotFilters=7,48,9,88,108,109,107,92,87,110,52,8,51,50,49,106)…it’s created by play-by-play play type filter, ie I didn’t pick and choose what I thought was a dunk so while I think the third to last one is on the edge of “dunk”, pbp classified it a such so it’s included. Also, the last one is for sure my favorite.
