How Almost Dying Created a Basketball Star

Skal Labissiere was once the biggest high school basketball star in the world. He was the projected number one overall NBA Draft pick as a teenager and eventually made it to the NBA. You never would have believed he’d get there just a few years prior when he was the victim of the second deadliest earthquake in history.

  1. Yea it’s honestly wild to think about all the prospects who didn’t make it far past draft night but were heralded as future stars in high school. Growing up in the hoopmixtape era was such a time..

  2. That was a nice change of pace from your usual content. Please make more of this kind of stuff! Really enjoyed that

  3. I swear I thought Skal was gonna be nice. Kings/Portland didn’t help and it was probably mostly mental.

  4. Hey this is a great video and I love the content you make. I just wanted to point something out you may not have noticed around 6:10 in the video you mention skal was traded for a 1st round bust this guy was actually Caleb Swanigan who passed away last year. It would be great if you could make a video about it. his story is actually amazing how he made it to the nba in the 1st place RIP he maybe could have been something but sadly passed away before his time

  5. What a great video Casey! I was in the Air Force in 2010 and deployed from Florida to respond to the crisis. There was a lot of carnage down there. Out of that I saw some incredible people doing incredible things! Seeing this and finding out that Skal came out of that gives me more faith in God. God has richly blessed that young man and he is living up to his potential. Not everyone is made to have a 10, 15, 20 year career in the NBA. I think that he's exactly where God wants him to be. Bravo Skal and thank you Casey for making this!

  6. One of the best videos you have ever made Casey! I love this change of perspective or (how we call as a social worker) reframing.

Is it bad to played in a NBA game or never? He tried it and I am pretty sure that he gave everything, more than I have ever can do. And he is giving so much back to the people and his community and that matters. I have a lot of respect to this people.

  7. Im a fan am, but with this video you surprised me more than ever, not everyone understands than success isnt just about money and fame, respect ✊

  8. Sometimes NBA offices get carried away with espectacular atheticism with a win now approach, then they forget to look closer. I believe this guy would have been more productive than Zion, for instance or many other examples around the league.

  9. One of your best videos! Thanks for all your hard work on these. Glad I found this channel.😃

  10. You should make a video on who he was traded for, Caleb Swanigan. That’s one of the stories of the past few years that makes me sick, he completely let himself go and died too young.

  11. You’re the only NBA youtuber that will talk about these kinds of stories. Please never stop. Way more impactful than the latest Ben Simmons drama. Not that I don’t also enjoy the drama.
